First ZT was the electric cub cadet. Absolute garbage. Two serious engineering flaws; the motors are direct drive with no belt so if you hit something you shatter the motor, and the blades are thinner than normal because they didn't use strong enough motors, so they bend constantly. I went through ten in my first couple years. My dealer ended up replacing it with a gas zt150 and that thing is fine.

Don't judge me. I still use a corded electric mower. I'm selling my little suburban house soon to buy 10 acres through, even then I'll probably keep very little lawn as I plan on dumping perennials all over and just maintaining the chaos best I can.

Some old Simplicity I bought for $125.00.
It's fine. I like that I can mow in reverse with no safety bullshit.
Deactivated all the safety fuckery. so I can get off it and jab a stick under the deck to get the honeysuckle vines to come loose.
Sad that it has a 20HP Kohler, they make loads of power but you can't get a modern Kohler to idle worth a fuck. Plus the bitch leaks oil. All the oil.

Sadly, for me it's the Poulan 42" Home Depot special from 2018
>but why?
I just bought my house and had to get something. It was about a grand, plus the bagger
>???
It has the shitty Briggs engine with the compression release on the cam, it's a little tab that breaks off and requires removal of the engine and replacement of the cam to fix.
I absolutely refuse to do that so I put my pack of smokes over the carb inlet to reduce the compression enough to get it to start. We'll see how long it goes for until the broken compression release tab gets sucked up into the guts of the motor and trashes it.

Apparently I don't have pics of it, but the main mower at the house is a 60" Exmark LazerZ with a 25ish hp horizontal shaft Kohler.

Farm mower is a Dixon commercial 60" front deck with a 22.5 or 23.5 Kohler horizontal shaft engine.

Also have a like new Cub Cadet 54" or 60" (can't remember off the top of my head) that my old man bought and we really haven't used much.

An older 42" Cub cadet rzt that was the main mower at the house until the 17hp Kohler vertical shaft engine chucked a rod and it got upgraded to a 22hp Predator. I really need to sell this one as it no longer gets used now that we have the Exmark.

And I also have a Grasshopper 721D front deck with the 3 cylinder diesel. It's in a state of disrepair right now because I bought it that way and haven't had time to fuck with it. The engine does fire up and run though.

My next "mower" project is going to be a Versatile 276 bi-directional tractor with a 15' 3 point brush hog mounted to the front of it. Going to unshroud the front, put a push bar on it and mow brushy trees on the river bottom.

I have rode a toro timecutter 42. thought it would be the same. now only realizing, that the toro has fuckhuge wheels. (it is not a myride model, just bigger wheels) which seem to reduce the vibrations like 80%. I could speed downhill on bumps and not even half as many vibrations as flat land on the ariens

I thought the same thing about mine but it was the compression release. If you manually turn it to just past TDC and block off the carb when you first try starting it--I do it with my pack of cigarettes, anything will work that covers up the carb throat--it'll choke the compression on the first stroke or 2 that will allow it to start. As soon as it fires, you uncover the carb inlet and throw the air filter back on. It'll run after that.

Interesting. My question is why dont they make a started with enough ass to spin it over without the compression release? Do they make hi torque gear reduction starters for small engines? Could someone adapt a cheap standard car starter over to these small engines to get them to crank over like a scalded monkey?

>> No.2847514

>>2847498
I wasn't able to find any sort of hi-po starter for this engine. I think it's related to them having to use an automobile-size starter and battery to get it to turn without CR, versus having a little bitty starter and battery that are 1)cheaper and 2)much lighter.
The one thing I tried when I was fumbling around in the dark and throwing new parts at the problem (my auto shop teacher is rolling over in his grave at what I've done) was I replaced the 180 amp battery with a 350 amp one. The battery was 6 years old and I figured it was time, anyway. This didn't help.
IIRC most starters used nowadays in cars are Nippondenso-style, and I think they are gear reduction, tho I could be wrong. I think it would be quite a process to get one to fit a Briggs engine...there are literally thousands of styles of starter used over the last hundred years, and while there may be one that's similar, good luck finding it. Maybe a starter/alternator shop guy might know, but those are getting fewer and farther between as time goes on too.

Amusingly enough, years ago I had a boat with a v6 outboard engine that actually had a pull-start pulley on top of the motor, the type where you supply your own cord and handle, wrap it around the pulley, and yank. Problem was, the man has not yet been born who could actually pull start the thing...I used to show it to my friends as a curiosity, and not one of them could get it to turn. Looking back, I wonder if there was a manual CR lever somewhere that I didn't know about.

It's just OK. Rear discharge is super prone to clogging and it started surging at high throttle blade disengagement and unable to low idle after 1 year. still using it because CBA to clean the carb though I have less excuses now that my workbench is clean.
Got pic from Home Depot website and saw it's 2200 fucking dollars now.
The pic has some extra something on the top of the handle that mine doesn't have but it's very close, I think I bought one or two features below completely decked out but even the most expensive was like 1000, I paid like 800 for it. Holy fuck fuck inflation.

I wouldn't do it again. If I had to buy another I'd buy something with a simple side discharge option. I usually mulch but when I need discharge, I fucking need it and the rear discharge on this thing sucks ass.

Good amount of power and the hydro drive feels amazing though.

6/10 it's OK but it sure isn't my dad's early 90s Toro 5HP with a hole through the magnesium deck he continues to use to this day.
