This is an extremely unsafe shelter, fyi. You are almost literally digging a grave.

Good thing I have a roof over my head already.

In the second pic up in the bottom left corner it shows straight walls of dirt. That is very unsafe in most any soil type. The one below it for sandy soil with sloped sides is the only real way it should be made in the first place since the slope prevents any soil from falling on you. Even a few feet down, soil collapsing suddenly can pin you in an awkward position and you can suffocate or die from exposure.

Submerge them in a tub of ice, cold water, and salt. Not sure how much salt to use but I bet you could look that up pretty easily.

>adding salt

This only works if you are actually lowering the temperature below 32F in a freezer. Adding salt to water and ice OUTSIDE of a freezer won't do jack. It'll help melt ice when applied to ice, but won't make anything colder or help transfer heat from one thing to another. You need t o make salt water then crank your freezer as low as it will possibly go. Chill the salt water down as much as possible before using it. You can reach -21F with salt water before it starts to freeze. Then use it, but don't use it with ice because the ice won't be as cold as the salt water and you'll end up sucking heat out of the ice and into the colder salt water.
