I'm fed up of mowing the lawn but I don't want to permanently ruin the garden with concrete. I'm thinking of buying 50 of these industrial ground protection mats and covering the entire garden with them. That way I don't have to mow the lawn and I can remove them if I need to for whatever reason. Any downsides to this plan?

Nah this will just allow invasive species to move in. Just rip up all the grass that is in the yard now and plant some native grasses.
Do a little bit of research to find out what grasses are native to your area and where to find/buy seeds. Then you can just mow them like once a year or burn it once a year if they are more fire adapted grass species.

Then after a month the grass under will die, and the first rain will turn the dirt underneath to mud. The mats will sink into the mud, the mud will seep over them, and then you'll have a shitty muddy mess that's impossible to clean. The mats will also weigh 300lbs when caked with mud so you won't be able to move them. Here's an idea that's not retarded: instead of spending a thousand dollars on mats, just hire a mexican teenager to mow your lawn once every 3 weeks for $20. That's like 7 years worth of mowing, which is way longer than the mats will last

Get tarps. Pin them down with ground stakes. Then in about two months, when the grass is dead, plant blackhawk arrowleaf clover where the grass was. Stays low enough not to need mowing, and reseeds itself.

Cost. I use stall mats as pavers over my water lines in case I need to dig one up (which I do, vindicating that idea, but I bypassed it with farm grade hose until nice weather) and would like more. They even go high at auctions.

I would absolutely use ground mats and even oil field mats and will eventually score some at my preferred price. The coming recession should be an auction feast.
