Long story short, I got offered a job in controls engineering coming from a different field (IT), but was still on a different contract. Seemed like a good gig and was from a somewhat personal reference (I have some family who know the owner), but had a ton of health and life shit get in the way of starting there (I took some classes for them during my contract despite telling them I needed at least 4 months to finish out my current situation and contract) and keeping in touch with them constantly - never got paid for them, but whatever. However, now, I kind of want the job back and its months later, but the position is still available. Should I just move on here? I could probably explain my situation a bit and at least come to some type of understanding for some ease of mind, even though I may not get the opportunity back. I feel like I fucked up anons and the industry around me seems hard to find people.

You'll likely be on the road a lot, and end up working with your hands much of the time as a controls engineer. I doubt it's the perfect fit for an IT person, it's almost more electrciam than engineer and on the job troubleshooting a variety of mechanical/electrical things.

Everywhere is always hiring controls techs. Its a different skillset from IT but you might like it. A lot of those jobs are very travel heavy, that could be a pro or a con for you. It probably pays slightly more and is always interesting.

Thanks anons, I was lined up to go for ibew electrician before this and considered going back to school for ee. I've been studying plcs, vfd, realpars etc also for about a year or so.

The job didn't have much travel outside local plants, but i do know it's not uncommon to run into road warrior stuff in controls. One of the plants wouldve been a smart factory with industry 4.0 buzzword shit

Yes. Judaism is all about following the letter of the law, but not necessarily the spirit of the law. The law says "don't travel" and they found a way to define travel in a very restrictive way "don't leave your home" but then they also redefined "home" to be "anything inside the string."

IT people often struggle with bringing things into tangible, real-world situations. Due I guess to a lifetime spent in a consequence-free digital environment where you're not gonna lose a finger if you fuck up. If you want to find good people from IT, look for ones who have a sideline in practical things e.g. hobby woodworkers. They bridge to the real world situations much better than the entirely abstracted pure technology types who have spent the majority of their lives dealing only with what happens behind a screen.

I think IT people have a tendency to solutionize (gun for the first / most obvious fix) before understanding the problem more fully.
Naiive implementations are extremely tempting, as they're often easy to do.
The reality is that very few problems are as straightforward as they first seem.

I work in software, but it is literally my job to ensure all the needs are met. As you astutely suggest, I'm a bit handy - but I think that just being a more well-rounded person in terms of skills and knowledge helps generally with this.

And trust me, IT failures have consequences. They might not kill you, but they can cost a *lot* of real man-hours, or might kill someone else (many examples of this from weapon systems and aviation)
