Yea yea built it during Covid right as I bought a $400k house and then bought a miter saw and a million other things for the house, so I didn’t feel like spending $80 on a sheet of plywood.

It’s fuckin halfway coated with paint and primer and polyurethane anyway so the surface is smooth, plus it will get replaced eventually when I drill enough holes into it.

Ehh it aint cheap, but all of South Florida got so fucking expensive after New York and New Jersey and Chicago scared tons of people away with retarded covid measures.

Literally all through 2021-2022, people from New York were buying 3/2 houses for $800k without even seeing them, and those houses were worth ~$400k a couple years before.

I actually think I got a good price on this house because the lady didn’t want to sell to investors. Was appraised for like $30k or $40k more than I paid. But there were absolute shitholes on the market early last year and people were asking $300k, like 2/1’s with no garage and 1000sq.ft, I have no idea who was actually buying and what they settled on, maybe some Air BnB’s, but they weren’t even like on the beach. Any 3/2 that wasn’t in the hood for under half a million was getting tons of offers as soon as it was posted.

My last house that I was renting, the owners were greedy fucks and tried to ask >$750k, they didn’t even want to negotiate, it was on the market in 2016 for under $400k and they ended up renting because nobody was willing to pay that much back then. So the house sat vacant for a year and they finally sold for nearly $200k less than what they were trying to get last year.

I would’ve made an offer on that if they were reasonable, especially after paying them ~$2500/mo in rent for 6 years. But I’m kinda glad I got out because it needed work and insurance premiums in Florida are real high and some flood zones shifted on a map so that neighborhood is paying $$$$. Next door neighbor told me he’s paying $9k/yr in insurance on a house he bought for like $405k in 2019 or 2020.

Goddamn I don’t miss the snow tho.

The boat was constructed using eastern white cedar, I'm replacing damaged planks with red cedar because I can't get white it where I am. Waterproofing will come from a canvas skin that is then painted. It's a fairly traditional canoe design.

And yes, that is a steam box!
Currently using an old Coleman for boiling the water but Naphtha is bloody expensive. I'll probably look into propane next year

Have you tried using a wallpaper steamer? I knew a few boat builders that used to use them to produce steam for their steam boxes. The only thing I think could be an issue with this option is voltage if you're in North America. I'm Australian and our outlets output 240v where as the US is 120v, so it may take far longer to properly reach the temperature you need to really be a viable option. Even still it might be something worth looking into, doubt it would be too hard to alter the current box to give it a try.

Yeah, I have looked into them and tried one at my old university. It worked quite well for hardwoods like oak, but for some reason it wasn't working well for cedar. It's a beautiful but somewhat temperamental wood, everything has to be right when working with it.
I think the wallpaper steamer would work for what I'm doing but I'd probably need to be running 2 of them at the same time. At that point it's not the voltage that's the problem, it's that I only have 15amps in my garage.
The gas burner is nice because it gets HOT and can produce a massive volume of steam, a full kettle runs about 1/2 hour and I can use the second burner to biol some water up so there's no break in steaming

Dang, well that throws that option out the window. Yeah, the fellas I knew used to use two at once like you mention.

The old fellas might have had an easier time steaming because they would mostly use a timber called Huon Pine, costs an arm and a leg, pretty oily wood, so I think that it may have lent itself to being easily steamed. Pic related is one of their boats, gunnels and ribs are Celary Top, sheer plank is King Billy, and I'm fairly certain the rest is Huon Pine.

Nice, this is the style I was thinking of using. Seems simple and sturdy. I like the storage you added on the end.
I was planning to make mine into an L-shape, screwed into a corner. I'm thinking if I do that I won't need a center support leg and the front will be completely open. I'd probably add a half-depth shelf near the wall so I still get some under-bench storage.

looks a lot like my shed setup. i had the same size limitation before needing a permit. i had a single hose ac unit like yours for my shed which work poorly in small rooms. i even converted it to an dual hose but it still sucked. i put a hole in the wall and converted to a window unit and it's much better. i should have gone bigger though as the heat load from summer + power tools can still overwhelm it.
