I recently bought a house and have a comfy sized yard. Not big enough for a riding mower but definitely large enough that I need a self propelled one. Must be gas because charging is lame. I used a Honda self propelled mower years ago and liked it but I want to know what's the current state of the mower market.
Any suggestions appreciated.

If your buying, Honda still produces the most reliable engines AFAIK.
Currently I alternate between one I Frankenstein'd one together and nother that I scavenged. Drive through an HOA subdivision; mid-wits put lawn equipment on the curb all the time because they don't know how to add oil, change the air filter, or clean a carburetor.

What are your alternatives from Honda? If you listed what's available maybe I could help.

Honestly whatever Lowe's and hoe depot sell. I'm in Austin Texas if that helps.
I might try and find a small engine repair shop and buy from a small business. So far I've seen Briggs and Stratton and some others.
Really just looking for reliability. I can wrench my own engines since these things are comically easy to work on.

This anon is right about trash mowers. As long as you're comfortable doing basic repairs like swapping on a new $10 chink carb or pull string you can get decent mowers for free. People love to put ethanol gas in them and let them sit all winter and wonder why they won't start next season.

These

Honda makes the best small engines, but I can’t remember the last time I had a Briggs & Stratton engine die on me before the mower deck rusted out. Anything with a Briggs engine on sale at Lowe’s or Home Depot should last a few years with very few issues.

The new Hondas are REALLY nice. And super quiet. I've never heard a more silent mower in my life...

I recently picked up a 5hp tiller someone put out. Their sign said "free needs fuel pump diaphragm". I immediately pulled over and got it. I put in about 1/2 can of fuel pump diaphragm juice into the carburetor. Let it soak and it started right up. Runs like a champ now.

I'm a dab hand with repairing small engines and didn't pay for a new lawn mower for the first 10 years of living in houses I had to mow the yard of. Worked the parts counter for a commercial mower shop for a while too.

If you're looking to keep things as effortless as possible go buy a 22" whatever they're selling self-propelled jobbie at the big orange box and call it done. Find a gas station that sells ethanol-free gas, change the oil before your first mow of the year with 30w oil (not 10w30), and wash the grass poop out from under it at least a couple times a year. Toss a new blade on or sharpen it with a file/grinder every year, and be happy you got 5 years out of it when you toss it to the curb for some anon like me to spend half a day getting running again once you've gotten it clapped out.

Don't worry about brand. Every mower in the US lasts well enough and dies of the same problems, and they're nearly all made by American Yard Parts under license to fit a brand's price anyway. If you're really horny to save a few bucks buy your new mower, try to catch the mowers your neighbors toss now and then, fix those, and by the time your new one is tired you'll know how to fix it. If you knew how to already you wouldn't be asking on here.

Get rid of grass (nasty piece of shit weed), and replace it with clover, for a white man's lawn.

My lawnmower broke so I figured I'd use a weedwacker and fucked up my lawn. There's brown patches everywhere, what the hell do I do?

Sould have just got a picrel. Works for decades. Easily repairable. Golf courses use a bunch of them towed behind a cub cadet. Do as they do.

Does anyone have any real experience using these? I tried using one and it totally sucked, but the grass might have been too long. Are they good once you get it down to size? Like cut the lawn once with a weed eater to knock it down, then maintain it with the reel?

A Honda that’s from the local business, big box store stuff is cheaper made than what the local suppliers have. I pushed mowed my yard for years but it took over 3 hours, I broke down and got a rider after 5 years

The same exact model? Nonsense. This is the sort of insane conspiracy theory that I love to see around here.

I used one, also when the grass was too long, and it was a dull as fuck scrapheap someone dug out of a relative's shed for free.
It was shit, I tossed it, and bought a fucking regular push mower that can survive foot long grass and shit if needed.

Honda makes solid small engines, well most of their engines in general. Anything with common parts is good. I needed to rebuild the carb on my old Briggs and Stratton, found a rebuild kit for $30 on Amazon, then I found a rebuilt carb for $13. Runs like a raped ape now. They even sent me some gas line and worm gear clamps.

Slight hijack, what about riding mowers? I was looking at a Huskie 0-turn for my two acres, but $4k is kinda steep. I can afford it and am willing to pay for quality, but if there's a cheaper alternative that's good or better then why not
Are Kawasaki engines good? I've heard they're better than most out there nowadays.

Look for a suffix on the model number. Big box stores often have special cheaper models produced just for them. Model 45SJE994Q (SuperMower Pro 4) might be good but sold at Walmart it's 45SJE994QW (SuperMower Pro 4) and all the metal gears have been replaced with plastic. Looks the same from the outside but will last for only half as long.

I have a toro from Home Depot, and it runs great and starts up first pull even after sitting all winter, but it doesn't seem to mulch at all and leaves a trail of cut grass as you cut.

My parents gave me an older mower that puts it to shame as far as end-result because it doesn't leave any clippings. I think they are transferred to another dimension or something. I think it is a Husqvarna with a Kohler engine

Wait a week for it to grow back?
