Why do people even like channel lock? What are you trying to cut? I’ve been pretty happy with my Channellock stuff, the teeth and cutting edges hold up decent, much better than the Chinese stuff that’s $5 less, and if you’re at Home Depot, you need to jump up another like $15 for some Kleins for a little bit of an improvement.

I’d rather go Knipex for actual channies, but Channellock has a million pliers and they’re available locally so there’s a couple cutters they sell with a real good geometry, and the Klein crimper tool is twice as much, and the 209 oil filter pliers are way more useful than the Chinese oil filter pliers that are like 12” long.

Bruh, the little ball bearing holding the socket is what fell out when I pulled the socket off. Second, 1/4" drive applications are low torqued, especially in aviation where nothing is rusted out and actually torqued to spec. I gave my snapon industrial rep an earful about how this was such a huge FOD issue for little shit like this to be falling out. But I kept the ratchet because plan to convert it into a compact 3/8" drive ratchet in 1/4" body. I've already done this on another one of my Williams ratchet and it's the shit.

w2c the 3/8” drive in 1/4” body rebuild part for that ratchet? Does Snappy sell one? Or some third party?

I keep thinking about grabbing one of those ratchets. I think Astro sells a sweet compact guy and a few other Taiwan brands, but I have yet to pull the trigger because priorities and I have 1/4” drive sockets up to 14mm-9/16” I think and any larger than that the socket is going to be wider than the ratchet.

Channellock cutting blades aren't hardened as well as other manufacturers, but they are out of the gate sharper, offer higher leverage than most other manufacturers, and use a knife and anvil style cutter vs meeting knives that allows for more tolerance for perpendicular loosening of the pliers; Ultimately, they cut super fine material like stranded wire and rope much better and for much longer than other manufacturers. Just don't cut steel and bolts with them.

Those Klein channellocks are made in Germany by NWS, they seem real decent so far, it’s hard to pick them vs Kinpex Alligators. The newest version of that tool is US made, doesn’t look as nice as the German one honestly. I have yet to really use the pliers wrench though so no opinion.

I think Klein still does some stuff well, but it’s expensive too. People do love their Klein linesmans and cutters and strippers, they don’t seem to dull that fast. I’m indifferent, I’ll take Klein over a cheap brand because cheap cutting tools are a pain in the ass. The Ideal and Southwires seem just as good. I’m not allowed on Reddit. These are Amazon reviews. And there’s a reason you don’t see it out in the field, their $100 15pc socket sets made in Taiwan, the ratchet doesn’t properly fit sockets from most other brands.

It’s goofy German shit. They make some decent screwdrivers and allen keys, but most of their shit has this Playskool handle that will peel with some use, and they try to reinvent the wheel by making these goofy overpriced wrenches that are very mediocre. Also they don’t really manufacture in Germany anymore, it’s all Czech Republic or Taiwan or Vietnam.

Fwiw, I actually bought this toolcheck thing for my father in law, he fell for the meme and I figured it would be good for him because his main ride at the time was a Suzuki motorcycle. It was like $90, the ratchet and stuff didn’t seem any better than my ~$20 Gearwrench micro ratchet kit, but the presentation seemed convenient to keep in a backpack or tucked away on a bike. The second time I ever saw it, a couple months later he grabbed it for something, and a bunch of the pieces like the ratchet and screwdriver handle would no longer stay clipped into the little case, and the compact case is like the main reason you would buy something like this.

Typically European brands use casting or HIP processes for their wrenches. HIP is just casting with extra steps. Most American wrenches are forged. Aside the obvious ones like Tekton laser cut thin wrenches. Forged steel forces the grain boundaries past the elastic region, into the plastic region. This means the stress/strain line steepens, which causes very little stretch during use. It's like tempering glass, the internal stress causes less flex. This is very important when a few thou stretch of the mouth can let a fastener slip. So really you should be hating on non-forged wrenches but since Heyco, Hazet, Stallwille, Gedore, Wera, etc, all use inferior manufacturing processes, go for it. Just know why you're hating them. Wera seems to make fantastic screwdrivers. Somehow they got the tips correct. The adjustable Joker wrenches are great for low torque applications like adjusting the legs on a stove or assembling a grill. You can cover a very large range of sizes with just one or two wrenches. Also, the advent calendars make great gifts for normies. It's dumb shit to give your FIL or BIL that they talk about for months.

Irwin is owned by Stanley Black & Decker. They fill out all of their brands hand tools with Taiwanese/Chinese generic designs. A surprisingly good offering from them is Irwin-Marples chisels. They appear to also make the DeWalt chisels, which makes sense. I do not have an XRF gun yet but they've tested very hard, and seem to keep initial sharpness very long. What channellocks have you been using? They’re sort of a meme, but the Knipex and some of their clones really are like a different tool compared to Channellock 440s and especially the cheap versions of that tool. You will be amazed the first time you grab a pipe or fitting with them if you’re stepping up from some Craftsman or Husky tier channellocks.

Yup. And it’s not like the button on the Knipex is hard to press. Milwaukee’s head geometry is goofy and they added the reaming function to the end of the handles which means they don’t have an anti-pinch handle like most of the other versions of the tool.

The one thing I like about those Milwaukee pliers is the grip. Might be my favorite grip of any pliers I’ve used, and I don’t really care for most of the larger “comfort grips” because the geometry is never quite there for everybody’s hands, plus it makes the grip worse when you’re working at odd angles.
