Let's try a "this is what I do and what my average day looks like" thread. Curious to know how many tradies we have here, what industry they are in. inb4 MUH DATA COLLECTION. I'm not larping as a tradie, literally bored and it's friday and it's raining outside.

>Job
Stone Restorer
>How long have you been doing it? What stage are you at?
Been doing it about 15 years, half that time running my own business
>Wake up
5am
>Morning Routine
Coffee, water garden, dogs needs, my needs (poop), work
>Commute
I live outside the city and it takes me about an hour in the morning. It sucks.
>Work arrival time
Under construction - 6:45-7am
Home owner - 9-9:30am
>Work doings
Chit chat with client for 30 or so
Prep house for work, taping edges, drop cloths, carrying in tools before doing whatever repair work. Work could be anything from grinding and polishing a counter-top or floor to doing colour matching for epoxy repairs. I sometimes have to do mold removal and other nasty shit.
>Lunch? Breaks? Peers? Smoking? Rituals?
I tend to work alone or with my part time helper- typically don't take a lunch as it usually means I can leave early. Peer wise I usually keep to myself . I don't smoke cigs on site but have a small cigar on my drive home every day.
>leave time?
I leave between 3 and 5 typically, my commute is about 45-1hr unfortunately.
>Work Life Balance?
I work 3 or 4 days on site and 1 day from home doing bookkeeping or other logistics. I never EVER work on the weekend.
>Annual Pay?
I pay myself around 100k but there is often cash work and other bonuses along the way.
>Vacation?
I don't vacation every year, I have gaps of a few days here and there. Every few years I take off for 6 weeks and camp with my dogs and wife or take a mega road trip.

Two weeks paid in the summer and 10 days around christmas, usually take one without pay to go hunting grouse and thinking about taking another one next winter to go visit Charleston and eat my face off. I'm a millwright, generally work from 2:30-10:30pm mon-fri in a factory that makes car parts. What I all do is a very long list, but basically I fix the machines when they break. I spend my mornings working out, playing guitar, general life taking care of business. about 60k a year unless I work OT, which isnt often bc I dont wanna. I'm saving up to buy a house even though it's just me, no gf. yet haha. Spend my weekends building dumb projects. Im working on a small guitar ampifier for my acoustic at the moment. Hit snooze a few times, go for a shit, get changed into work clothes, watch tv for 20 mins or so, brush teeth, put boots on

Speak crap in the office for 30-40 mins, have a coffee or tea.
Find out what I’m doing for the day, get materials needed, drive to work area, could be maintenance, installation or just repair. Or even just look at something.

>Lunch? Breaks? Peers? Smoking? Rituals?
I prefer to work alone, because I can self direct my day and not put up with crabby old whinging men, getting angry over petty issues. Have breaks and lunch on time, chill out and go about my day in a
Leisurely, non stressful way. The stress is caused by other people I work with, I’m convinced they are hypersensitive and hyperactive, especially the young guy that is addicted to caffeine and will have 3 coffees and a few energy drinks a day and can’t stand still. It’s very annoying and fucks my day up.

>leave time?

4 , or 5-10 mins early

I usually work 5 days a week, but sometimes do work on Saturday or Sunday. The overtime’s wages are huge and worth it, but your are not obligated to do it.

>Job
Aircraft Electrician

>How long have you been doing it? What stage are you at?
2.5 years, Level 2.

>Wake up
0545.

>Morning Routine
Strenuous exercise until 0730.

>Commute
Live close by, probably around 20-30min drive on average.

>Work arrival time
0900 work begin at aircraft hangar.

>Work doings
Prepare mind and self for around an hour or two until actual work orders for the day arrive. Once they arrive, are distributed to all the workers by skill levels and or availability. Begin on the work order given right away with the prepared tools. Try to finish the work order before day end at around 1730.

>Lunch? Breaks? Peers? Smoking? Rituals?
Smoke break whenever I can due to the stress/high level of expertise related to wiring flying machines so they don't end up a ball of fire 10,000 feet in the air and kill people. Lunch is around 1130 to 1300 so you don't stress out and kill people.

>leave time?
Leave time around 1730, later if you suck at your work order and have to continue doing the work. You never really leave stuff undone because the aircraft may need fly/be moved. If you cannot properly do your repairs/retrofits/maintenance work order, you try to revert it to how you found it before you started which sucks.

>Work Life Balance?
After work, you don't really have to worry much about it. I get weekends off to do whatever I please as well and get adequate leave. They try not to overwork or stress us due to the nature of our craft.

>Annual Pay?
Quite low in this area of the USA. Around $55,000 annual for entry-level. I am Level 2 and may get a raise if I increase my skills/certifications/expertise.

>Vacation?
Ample vacation days. A month or two if I don't use them. Which never happens because I always go boujie and go somewhere far.

on work days i let homeowner know im here, set up tools and materials, set up ppe and snacks/drinks if expecting volunteers, plan specific tasks if expecting volunteers. when volunteers arrive i assign tasks and then work with 1 or two on a project, checking in on the others every half hour or so. on office days i buy materials, arrange subs if needed, plan specific tasks for specific days based on volunteer signups, go to the next house to be worked on to discuss scope.
>Lunch? Breaks? Peers? Smoking? Rituals?
1 hour hunch (usually homeowners cook for me), otherwise just take breaks when i need water or shit or to hit my vape next to my car
>leave time? plan for an 8 hour workday, but the house needs to be liveable so i may leave early if the next task will take a long time (and compromise liveability) or late if im in the middle of something. most work is replacing cabinets/countertops, showers, floors, walls and subfloor in areas where water has destroyed it. when doing bathrooms i always try to leave with sturdy subfloor, functional toilet, and if theres a bath tub then function drain and the tub faucet working (shower will be capped if walls/surround arent in yet)
>Work Life Balance?
ideally capped at 40 hours a week, but due to needing to leave the house functional sometimes i go 3 or 4 hours overtime.

45k per year before ot
>Vacation?
2 weeks

sorry for the double post, ran out of space. overall bad pay but it was easy to get, i like the impact it has (allowing families to safely stay in mobile homes they own outright instead of having to move into basement apartments) and it isnt very stressful since we dont have competition. im planning on going into normal construction management when i get married so i can give my future family a better life.

Dont bother
Unironically just walk into every machine shop that is within commute distance and ask to put in an application.
It takes zero qualifications and zero effort to get hired as a CNC button pusher.

Get a year or two experience and be on the hunt for apprenticeships that open near you. Hop at the first opportunity, or try to get one at the place that hired you.
A certificate or small degree is just a piece of paper to machine shop owners, theyll be training you on how to run their machines and their orders anyways. There is a lot of negative connotation for young guys, and especially those right out of college who think they are hot shit.

For better or for worse, most independent shops just have old ass boomer owners who respect you walking in and showing enthusiasm than walking in with a piece of paper.

Hey tradies, can I ask what you think is the best way to find a job? I'm a long-time hobbyist looking to switch careers from tech to general carpentry (residential). I worked labor at a jobsite last year but didn't do much other than move boards and clean shit, which is what I signed up for.
I'm in Canada and looking on Indeed job postings the shit I see available is basically the bottom of the barrel. Badly written postings that make it sound like I'd be working with crackheads who will make me do unsafe shit for a dollar over minimum wage. The other big problem is builders in my area don't require journymen, so even if I get involved with house building I won't be able to work as an apprentice and eventually become a real carpenter.
Should I instead be finding the 'good' companies and contact them regardless of whether they're hiring?
I've also had people tell me to contact the union, but I'm not sure about this since:
1. I'm not a registered apprentice yet
2. I've heard the union around here only does commercial jobs, not residential

The short form is that money isn't something I have to worry about. I'm naturally frugal and there are no material things that I 'want'. And if there were it wouldn't be a problem. If a carpentry job paid $0 I would still be looking for one. But my caveat is I need it to be at a reputable company under a skilled journeyman, and I need to learn typical home-building things from concrete to finish carpentry.
The goal is to get the skills and qualifications needed to build homes and small rural communities. I'm autistic (genuinely) about certain things relating to community building and human lifestyle, and I won't bore you with that, but that is what has lead me to this point over this last decade. I'm not looking for something to pay bills, just something to get me from where I'm at to a point where I can tell people I'm a carpenter with all that entails.

That's actually reasonable but acquire complementary skills while you're at it and if the chance to make money at something else more technical turns up, take advantage.

If you meet local contractors you might hire on as a laborer. If you've Habitat for Humanity or equivalent that's another route to training. If you get a gig doing concrete work that's well worth your time just not as a career.

Make friends with structural steel too. It's wonderful stuff.

take a day to drive around the nicer parts of town and when you see a professional looking contractor's truck scope it out to see if it looks like they're doing carpentry. if they are, wait for someone to come out to the truck and then go up, introduce yourself, say you're very interested in learning the trade and you're looking for work. have a card with your name, number and a note like 'looking for carpentry work' on it somewhere so they don't just forget who you are when you're gone.

you'd be surprised how often this will land you a job. i've done it several times in my life. white tradesmen really respect people who still do this.

make sure you dress the part though. don't be a twat and have a hard hat on or something silly but try look normal, ie work boots, blue jeans and a flannel or something like that.

i don't get why you're so hung up on the qualification part if the area you live in doesn't even require it. some of the best carpenters/tradesmen of all time have lived in eras where qualifications didn't even exist, you simply just did the job and you were a carpenter. if you work for a good company you'll learn all the ins and outs of home building, it's really just foundations and framing that are the important parts.

What do you mean by make friends with structural steel? I've read briefly about it but from what I've seen it's mostly used in commercial applications. I can weld already (am mediocre) but if structural steel isn't a career thing, could it help me in a rural / village setting?

also make sure you have basic carpentry hand tools. there's not too many you need to start off with.
>framing hammer
>level (3ft is fine)
>tape measure
>knife
>toolbelt
>a couple of chisels
>screwdriver (flathead and phillips)
>small prybar
>speed square

helps to have your own impact/drill as well

thanks for the encouragement anon. I've actually been dummy serious about training myself for this stuff the last couple years so not only do I have all the tools, I've done simulated builds of most of the common tasks like framing / windows / drywall. Have learned paul sellers style 'fine' woodworking too as a way of gaining some kind of competency.
The reason I'm hung up on all this stuff is (usually) just the good ole autism. I overprepare as a tradition. The hard part for me, way more than skills (which come easy), is the interpersonal part. Finding the job, making sure it's the job that will actually teach me what I need to know, navigating tradesperson attitudes to decipher banter from abuse. That's the part I'm at now and that's why I'm asking 4chan of all places "shit dawg do i ask union for a job?".

not really a tradie but I like these threads so I will contribute

>Job
IT technician. Level 1.5 support. Network/Help desk. I also build electronics and do field work. Honestly don't even know what my title is anymore.
>How Long? What stage?
10 years. Stagnant as fuck.
>Wake up
5 or 5:30 AM depending how many times I hit snooze.
>Routine
Wake up, get assembled, toss breakfast together, eat on toilet, shit, brush teeth, toss lunch together in a box. Sleep at work for 1-2 hours, do some work, shit post, get coffee from down the hall around 9 or 10. Sometimes am busy or SHTF then I don't get the luxury of any of this.
>Commute
15min to, 20-25 from.
>Work arrival time
6:30AM
>Work doings
Answer calls, fix problems, fix network outages, field work, help with deployments, maintain an in house designed electronic system, keep co-ops busy and productive, order stuff, work on new locations/plant/operations changes, coordinate with vendors, network and voip admin
>Lunch and breaks
See morning routine above. I usually eat lunch on the clock at my desk. We get half an hour so I usually don't even take it. Every once in a while I might get fast food if I didn't have time to toss lunch together but I always bring that back and eat on the clock.
>Leave time
5PM. I work 4x10, 6:30 to 5 with a (skipped) half hour lunch break every day.
>Work life balance
Great. I leave work at work and rarely need to stay past 5. Used to have on call rotation but director took that over after end users abused it for non critical items and people started leaving/threatening to leave due to this. Was supposed to be temporary. Has been longer than originally stated. Not going to say anything.
>Annual pay
65K last year, I should break 70 this year.
>Vacation
Get like 3.5 weeks (in hours) of general PTO. Sick, vacation, etc all besides holiday, is PTO. I am off every Monday so if I need to schedule something I do it then if possible to not take off of PTO time.

Any advice for starting your own residential HVAC company? I went to a year of trade school, did residential for 3 years, commercial for 4 years. Going to go get licensed in my state to get my H3 contractors license within the next 8 months. I can diagnose and fix most any problem on residential, don’t have much experience with complicated zoning controls but I know people who do. Hoping to lean more toward minisplits as I have a lot of experience with Daikin/Mitsubishi VRV/VRF systems and the installs for residential homes are loss easy. What advice would you offer?
