it actually started life as a scrap from my tv stand but the project's been in my head for over a decade.

thanks, and no. do need a tablesaw or a new router bit and a fancy jig to cut the frets, also some fret wire. going to be 34.75" bridge to bridge with 23 frets

sick dude, dig the wood grain. i don't plan on paint either, just a solid coat of tung oil.

Cutting fret slots with a router?

What ever happened to hand saws, it takes less then 10 minutes to slot a fret board by hand.

It's a nice looking instrument though.

But frets with a router?

Built this (guitar, not cat)
But built it at a luthier school, so not sure if it counts.

Any tips on neck shaping? I'm building a solid body electric ukulele.

just drew a quick diagram for you, hope it makes sense.
this is the neck in profile. decide on the shape you want, plot it on paper. the green is the desired shape, the brown is the wood that will eventually be removed.
draw tangent lines on the paper, where the lines intersect the edges of the block measure in then draw lines along the length of the neck and shave it down.
do it in several steps as depicted.
does that make sense? hard to describe on the interbutts.

Thanks. I was thinking of getting the rough shape with a bandsaw and then shaping details with a file. Thoughts? Tips?

>> No.261643

For a uke neck I would rough it in profile with a saw then go at it with a spoke shave, rasp and chisel,, holding it in playing position from time to time to check the feel. I slot and glue my fingerboards on right after I do the rough saw wok. This makes it easy to get on straight, and easy to clamp since the back of the neck is thin enough for easy clamping, not to mention relatively flat. Having the finger board on from the start just makes it easier to to guage proper thickness and feel while you work.

what this guy said. i might skip the saws and just go with a spokeshave and rasps up till sanding.

good thinking, will remember that for the next one.

What are your thoughts on neck attachment? Do you have a favorite method? I'm personally partial to a tenon joint.

Dovetail ftw.

>> No.262277

Sliding dovetail for instruments with any real tension, tenons for low tension instruments.
