What's the most effective way to stop or prevent or at the very least punish theft or attempted theft of catalytic converters? I live in baltimore and there are a gaggle of degenerates who are stealing the CCs from cars even in broad daylight.

So, what's the best way to prevent this? Weld razor wire to the underside of the car so someone back-boarding under would get sliced up?

An accelerometer that tests for vibrations in the frequency produced by angle grinders and triggers a release of Benzyl Chloride or pepperspray? I am fully willing to cause bodily harm to the thief but not kill.
Maybe even a deterrent that's not overly conspicuous from the outside, but someone who's thinking of making an attempt would see it and get too spooked.

I bet this isn't comprable to booby trapping a house for example because there is no possible reason an emergency personnel would try to steal a CC from a parked, grounded car. This is a situation that ONLY a degenerate criminal beaner/nog/crackhead would get themselves into.

i would still be careful with boobytraps, legally speaking you will still get fucked. you'd have to think of something that hopefully wouldn't be considered a boobytrap. like for instance it's an exhaust component, and those get pretty hot normally. so maybe hook it up to a coil like that kid did in home alone to the doorknob, just make it inconspicuous.

or if you just want to prevent theft, some kind of strong, loosely wrapped wire generally works pretty well because any kind of reciprocating saw will not be able to get through it. probably won't stop an angle grinder though.

you can always just be ready to run out with a shotgun and blow their brains out of their skull. by nature of the crime they're committing they will be holding a deadly weapon in their hands so as long as you don't shoot them in the back it should be a pretty straight forward case of self defense.

1) Cat shields and cages, they're readily available and they make cutting out a cat a huge bitch, so people don't bother. They don't make it impossible by any means, they just make it more of a pain in the ass with a reciprocating saw or angle grinder. Bespoke ones made for your specific vehicle cost more than generics, but you can be more confident they'll fit, and in some cases may be easier to install.

2) Traps, razor wire, razor blades, it's dumb shit and it does not help you. Either it won't slow anyone down, or you're just going to piss off the thief who's under your vehicle with power tools.

Weld in flanges to converter and to a straight pipe section to match if inspection matters.Anti-seize the bolts or use v-band clamps and swap before inspection.
