I assumed this was four wire and bought 50’ 6/4 SOOW cable. It’s only three wire, so the neutral isn’t needed. How bad did I fuck up and what should I do? I can’t return it. I’m just gonna cut the neutral for now, but I’d like to find a suitable use for the extra copper later. Is there any application that really needs four wires?

>> No.2587266

And what is the wire it came with called?

Here’s the wire I got

I asked my electrician friend, and he told me to get this wire. I don’t know shit so I didn’t even consider there was a chance the wire numbers were different. Only $100 down the drain though, so not the end of the world, but someday I’d like to make things right by actually using that fourth wire. Any ideas?

I dunno. Why are you?

>> No.2587506

Any ideas though guys? I’m using the wire to run a PID that controls two 25A elements. I might just get a 4-wire PID later as an upgrade and use this one for something else.

At least I’m doing something. This is one of many projects going on atm. What are you doing?

I'm a Canadian electrician for reference.

First of all, consider it a sunk cost. Fucking around trying to pull a wire out of a cable sounds bizarre. You can already see a cable in your panel where the same thing was done. Happens all the time.

Also for future reference SOOW is typical of what I would use in an industrial setting, it's an extra hard usage cable rated at 600V that is oil/water resistant. Probably overkill for your application, there are likely cheaper options that fit your use case such as SJOW.

Also the enclosure in your second picture looks like it's Type 1 (indoors only).

>> No.2587538

how are you going to get that extra wire out without ruining the whole cable? Just accept that you fuckered up.

>>2587538
>>2587523
I’m just going to not use the wire, I’m not gonna pull it out lol. That’s what I meant by ‘cut’, cut it short.

I am considering it a sunk but may be doing more work like this in the future, so wanted to know how I might utilize the currently unused fourth wire. Thanks for the tip on SJOW. I really should’ve double checked my friends recommendations with /diy/ first but I just trusted his judgement. He wasn’t too far off but I could’ve saved a tad had I done so.

Too bad the enclosure looks indoor only, I have no other choice for now unless that’s a super cheap fix.

I hope to be running a high kw boiler soon, so maybe the SOOW will come in handy for that? The wires only 6 gauge, so the maximum amp rating is 50, but if it can handle more volts maybe that’ll work? I want like a 25-50kw boiler.

>> No.2587548

Right now I’m using a PID from a brew system controller (pic in OP) with two 25A elements to act as a boiler/steam generator. At some point, I’d like to retire this PID and use it for its originally purpose, brewing. So when I do that, I’ll potentially have an opportunity to rectify the wrong decision I originally made in buying this four wire SOOW.

In the future I may be running tilt kettles, autoclaves and a boiler. In particular I was looking at this boiler:
https://catalog.electrosteam.com/item/process-steam-generators/lb-40-60-electric-steam-generators/lb-40-h
And you can run it at up to 600v at 30A, so maybe that would be a good application?

>> No.2587551

Here’s the manual/specifications for said boiler, would this be a good use?
https://www.electrosteam.com/wp-content/uploads/LB-40-60-USER-MANUAL.pdf

Not sure if it’s 4 wire yet.

And the purpose of using flexible cord is that the layout and location of stuff is subject to change at the moment. Everything may even be moved to a different property, for example.

>> No.2587562

Please answer someone I am on the edge of my seat over this for some reason.

>> No.2587563

Your fourth conductor will be useful if ever you switch to three phase gear or if you have a device that uses 240/120 voltages, not super uncommon. Other than that I dont see a use.

>> No.2587570

Maybe the tilt kettle or autoclave is a better use for the wire, I didn’t realize 480v was so hard to come by. Someday I will get my moneys worth for this mistake though.

>> No.2587572

>>2587563
I will definitely be using three phase stuff in the near future, like for the tilt kettle. Wish I could utilize the 600v aspect too but I don’t see that happening for awhile.

Thats correct. But like the other poster mentioned youd likely be fine with service junior, and dont buy commodity goods like heavy copper wire online.

I bought it in person at the Platt’s store, I was going to risk Amazon or whatever else. Luckily I only overplayed 102 bucks though, and I think I’ll have some use for it when I do the triple phase stuff.

Yeah, they look like the plugs that go to spider boxes. I'd assume it took the wire you bought, too. Never seen one that didn't take 4 connections..

nothing much you can do. I would just ignore it, but if you HAVE to do something with it, you can just cut the other wires short so you have an elongated neutral and then just use the neutral as a back up chassis ground. Mark it as ground on both ends or you will die.

Do you guys not have 3 phase power?
