how the fuck do radial drill operators get this right? i have literally no idea how you can just scratch lines with a tape measure and whack the part, and it comes out fine. i can measure by tape fine, i've even positioned a bridgeport by tape and had it come out under .010", but the scribing confuses me to no end

as i explained in /EMT/ the problem is that the universe just isn't set up right for this operation, you cannot drill a hole in the right place.

sounds like you're over thinking it, just scratch it, split the line, and punch it. I'm completely retarded and can land holes.

I use a magnifying glass to aim the prick punch etc. Always use machinists center drill bits to start holes because standard twist drill bits walk.

>center drill
yea idk why people don't use these more often. it's such a basic thing to do

scratch it how though? how do you make a decent cross on a part? is it really just eyeballing it and hoping you get it right?

Use a guide like machinist square, straight edge etc. I don't use blue dye, I copy the pros who use thick Sharpies (red or blue) as machinist dye because unlike liquid dyes they don't chip.

Another method is set your digital or vernier caliper to desired distance from the edge then lock the tension screw and scribe using that. Some autspergies worry about wearing the tips of the caliper jaws but if you actually managed to do that by then you paid for MANY calipers.

buy $20 amazon calipers. they work and it's $20, about as much as a decent scribe.
