Have you tried not being afraid? When I was a kid, I was afraid or angle grinders. Then my dad told me to cut off a bolt head and left me to it. I didn't want to look like a pussy so I just stopped being afraid. Now I use angle grinders in all types of dangerous situations. Never had a wheel break on me, never got hurt besides some small metal splinters to the forehead if I have to take the guard off. If it helps, I'm still skeeved out by table saws, but I use them regularly; being able to overcome a fear and put it out of your mind is a good skill to learn.

What this guy said.

but don't wear gloves. Gloves and power tools don't mix. When you wear a glove and you are using a power tool you are giving the tool a better chance of doing horrible damage to you. If you are gloveless and the saw nicks you, then maybe you just get a cut, but if you have a glove on and it contacts the saw, the glove material can force your hand into the cutting blade.

Also, always use 2 hands with an angle grinder. Never one. Oh and disconnect the battery or power cable when changing blades.

For some reason I don't get scared. I think I should but it doesn't happen.
I prefer the gas powered 2 stroke saws.

I use earplugs/headphones, goggles and make sure the sparks aren't going to fuck anything up.
I also take it easy on the pressure against the cut object.

This is the answer. An angle grinder is, in my opinion, very rarely the best tool for the job. When you use them for things they *are* the best tool for the job for (removing mill scale from steel with a flap disk, for example) they are relatively safe. Cutoff wheels are genuinely dangerous and I will go to great lengths to not use one. Get yourself a die grinder for small work and a proper set of saws for larger stuff. They are much cheaper than an ER visit.

Get a corded one with a paddle switch. The cord limits its reach, which is a safety feature. You shouldn't be using an angle grinder somewhere that you don't have power, because if something happens, you don't want to be unreachable. I have the Bosch GWS10, and it's fantastic.

And I'm sure I'll be called gay for my great level of caution, but I've personally seen enough brutal zip disk injuries for a lifetime. I one time watched a guy drop an angle grinder with one of those fucking "chainsaw" blades and stood in horror as it ran up his leg and into his crotch. He was in the hospital for a month. Don't fuck around, you only get one body.

Welders wear APPROPRIATE gloves with angle grinders all the time and they provide a useful degree of protection. Agree on the rest though. I would never wear gloves working a lathe for example, but with proper glove like Tillman TIG gloves and both hands where they belong gloves are not an issue with angle grinders and protect against hot sharp metal and rotating wire brushed.

Cutoff wheels are properly used by the millions every year. Keep the guard installed and aim the grinder away from you.

>>2544507
Ever see a grinder injury when the operator used it properly? There is no excuse for dropping one and no excuse for not positioning oneself properly or not wearing proper PPE including a full face shield.

OP should note almost no DIYers need a 9" angle grinders. Most useful size is 6" (for the cutting wheels) which also take 4-1/2" accessories

Sounds like excessive pressure. Quality discs like Pferd and SAIT (I buy boxes from the local welding supply or online) hold up very well. I let the disc float and maintain control, and importantly I rock it forward and backward in the plane of rotation to avoid binding like the industrial abrasive cutoff saw I used at my first job.

I prefer 6" grinders for the reach, easy control and edge speed, and modded the guards on my 4-1/2" cordless grinders to 6" by variously buying a 6" guard and removing the internal nubs (DeWalt) or cutting and welding (Makita, Milwaukee) to combine their mounts with 6" guard shells. Works great.

Never let your guard down.
Learn the right way to operate something and the reason why most accidents happen with that particular tool (literaly, 10 minutes on youtube can save you a lifelong of shame).
Again, don't lower your guard just because some machines looks very safe. I say this as someone who actually cut a finger off on a really safe benchsaw.

I agree with what you guys are saying about welding and gloves, and other types of construction and gloves.

But any time I have a cutting wheel or saw, I do not use gloves. I think they give you a false sense of security. You should always cut carefully in a way that there is no chance your hand or fingers are gonna hit that blade.

Don't wear gloves (generally, there are exceptions) when using stationary power tools where you manipulate the work piece or controls. Do wear gloves when using hand-held power tools where your hands are on the tool.

Angle grinders produce sparks, heat, and vibration, and they're high-speed low-torque tools. Gloves provide a favorable risk balance against the hazards they present.
