I took my daughter's car down for an MOT and was quoted £800 to pass it. I was told all 4 brakes need changing (front disc/pads, rear drums), there is a leak in the exhaust and some welding needs to be done. I decided to deal with the brakes and exhaust myself for a fraction of this and to just take it somewhere else after that likely won't tell me to get welding done.
Picrel is the brake pads I just took off. Is this garage mugging me off or do they really need changing so this level?

Better quality brake pad picture

Looks about half way worn down. There should be a little metal tab on one of the ends of the pad. When your breaks do wear down to the tab thickness they need to be replaced.

Most likely you needed 1 or 2 replaced and the shop just wanted to charge you for all 4.

Thanks. This one is the most worn of all, although they're all neatly the same. I put new ones on anyway and new discs. I should have checked before I bought them

Just did the breaks on my gfs car. New vs old and circled the wear tab.

Op your pads look like they still have life left in them, but they're also dirt cheap so I would just replace them to appease the inspectors. God I'm glad we don't have to deal with those bullshit inspections here...

If you put on new discs you put on new pads. You change discs and pads together.
Keeps the braking force even as possible stops the car pulling
You posted one pic of one pad that looks actually pretty fucking abysmal it shouldt have all pitted rust holes over the surface. On it's own wouldnt fail but I'd replace that if it was on my car.
The boy quoted you 800 because he saw you were a mug and he ws right, you are completely clueless. Sad state of affairs when an idiot like this is allowed a licence. Get yourself a bus pass mate do us all a favour.

Your pad looks fine to me. You're coming up to replacement soon but as far as safety is concerned those are adequate for the time being. Disclaimer, not a mechanic or MOT (((inspector)))

Eeeeeeeeeeh I'd guess you could get away with it for another 10k/15k miles or so -- assuming this isn't a taxicab in the limey equivalent of San Francisco. But with inflation where it's at, just do 'em now before the price goes up. If the shoes are in roughly the same shape, same answer.

Important point, this. New (flat) discs on old (roughed) pads means less surface contact means less braking force. Until the peaks on the old pads wear away.
Amusingly, old discs and new pads is the same thing. Except the pattern on the disc very quickly carves its pattern into the pads, causing an immediate huge amount of wear.

Nothing wrong with your pads if that is the worst one. Go to a different inspection station because that one is trying to rip you off.

Normal around here. Shop changed all my brakes, was necessary, they said. They showd me some brakes that looked like they had been in sea water for a year.

There was just one problem: I had changed the tires a few weeks earlier and checked the brakes, and what they showed me were not my brakes. Without photographic proof I had no option but to pay. I never returned, and next time I bought a different brand of car.

>> No.2519251

I didn’t my own brakes for 20 years. Used to live in the mountains and breaks got a lot of use and would only get about 20k out of them. One time I was at the dealer for some other service and had them do the brakes too and ended up getting 40k out of that set.

Not sure if it was dealer parts vs aftermarket or Dealer taking more care to clean and lube pins and metal to metal contact points, probably both. Would do again but I have learned a lot watching YouTube videos of how pros do it.

OP here. Thanks for all the replies. For context the car is this, does about 4k miles a year and has done only 1.1k since the last inspection when the brakes weren't even given a warning. I've changed them anyway - luckily yesterday as it's pissing down with rain now - and have booked in to somewhere now favourable for a retest.

Considering my local garage wanted £160 per wheel for a disc and pads and I can parts for £30 per wheel on eurocarparts it seems I am better off if I just do that.

At least here in Canada (and the US), use rockauto. They might do bongland too.
