They can but they have slightly different voltage and line requirements from a normal line, so you would have to make sure you find a circuit for that. I want to say -60v r to g and -7v tip to g, and the ringer is different. Look stuff up. It used to be called a coin line.

Look into Futel. They retrofit disconnected payphones to run over voip and make them free for the public. Might be more political/social than you're looking for but running a free phone in your city would be a very interesting project.

I literally have one you dummy, from US Mobile. Well it comes with texts as well I guess but it's still only $12. I use a flip phone with it and I can make as many calls or texts as I want

that plan on a SIM card inside a cellular modem would work just fine and maybe you could even rig up something to accept quarters before it'll make a call so you can recoup some of the monthly costs

Replace the microphone in the mouthpiece, run a new cable to the base, and put a pi or small PC inside. Same for the switch that is depressed when the phone is placed down on the hook. Run voice recognition software that turns on when the phone is picked up, and if the right word or phrase is spoken, it unlocks and opens a secret door.

you can hook these old phones to you cellphone over Bluetooth with an xlink gateway. when im home i still talk over a model 500 bell phone because i can and il like the ringer sound. I plug it into my house phone plug and it can make any phone that i plug into the network work up to 4 ren.
