/diy/, I want to build something fucking incredible. Something so cool I will shit my pants every morning that I wake up and remember, "holy buttered fucknuts, I built the most awesome shit possible."
Ok, maybe not a space cruiser or anything like that, but a shed would be nice. A really dicking awesome shed. For a while I've had the idea of building my own two-story (small alcove-like second floor) mancave in the backyard, fed wifi via a cantenna (a /diy/ specialty), Mass Effect themed. Yep, Mass Effect. I've been looking into swooshy doors and how I could build a relatively simple automated sliding door, made of a light metal, opened via a control panel (could be very simple). I would have futuristic lighting inside, and my PC setup at a desk I built, integrated with my computer system. Also screens, screens everywhere.
If not a shed, other ideas are welcome.
Basically this thread DICKING AWE-INSPIRING ideas general.
Pic semi-related; it's the size I'd like my shed to be, except it would look more futuristic, like those squarish prefabs.

something like this, but smaller? should make it out of thin, cheap metal plates or something that looks like it. maybe glassfiber.

>> No.246507

Have you looked into shipping containers? They're fairly cheap, and if you have access to cutting and welding tools, you can do quite a bit of custom modification.

I've seen this pic, and I was thinking of similar designs when I mentioned prefabs. So, yeah. I thought about thin metal plates...
>>246507
Would be cool, and if I cut out the top and bottom I would have a prefab wall going all the way round... unfortunately I do not have the tools nor the expertise for that OR getting a large shipping crate into my backyard.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Well, there are small and big containers.
You could ask a friend for tools and help.
As for the cutting and welding, practice makes better!

You actually made me want to do the same kind of project,

When I am going to build my own house, i will be using containers, actually alot cheaper!

What kind of place do you live in? do you live in a city, on the country? if you have lots of land for yourself you could digg a container or more into the ground. I've been fantasizing about that for years!

>> No.246547

I've been thinking of something similar OP. I have a busted, rotting shed in my backyard, want to make it into a bad ass garden house or the like. I was kind of thinking about making fairly thin concrete plates, and using those for walls for a modern sort of look. Then maybe plexiglass panels or similar for wrap around windows. Don't know how feasible any of this is, but it doesn't seem like it would be terribly difficult given enough time.

Ah, lovely, a fellow earthship admirer.

Don't be deceived by the smooth curves OP, earthships probably could be built with more angular corners, it's just that their construction materials (tires and stucco, or mud, either or) lend themselves to curving walls.

Trust me, an earthship is incredible. If built correctly, they collect and recycle their own water, they generate their own electricity, they collect and store their own heat. Sometimes I wonder if having to worry about utilities prevents us from truly living.

Anyway, you can probably wire one of those things pretty easily to fit your needs. Probably will require an electricity bill, but whatev, it won't be too bad. The use of white stucco and a solid-colored tile floor would probably give it a somewhat surreal off-world feel, even more so with the additional electronics.

I was the burn lead, and was on the design team. It was ALL dimensional lumber but for 168 linear feet of engineered lumber in the wing walls of the central tower.

most of the plywood was 5/8, or 1/2, there was some inch plywood for the plinths under the wing walls in the central tower, and to help spread force off of the steel foundation plates.

if you have any specific construction questions I probably can answer them.

Some of the little British Isles would be ideal, or places around Malta, because the weather can be quite nice (I like rain) and the land is beautiful, and the land is still decently priced. I would like a place where it either snows in the winter only, or doesn't get cold at all.

Okay.

Frame the whole thing out - this is very easy, you will want headers over windows (I would suggest doubling up 2x4, you don't need to use 2x6 unless you're going insane with what kind of weight you want on that second story)

Build a solid foundation, this could be as simple as some plywood over a level, well drained surface, or it can be as complex as a concrete stem wall, depends on what you want to do and how long you want it to last, I like a pier foundation, simply because it's easy, cheap, and stable for what you are doing, use pressure treated lumber, but try to get the lengths you need presawn rom the lumber yard (You can cut pressure treated, but wear a respirator, at least n-95)

I would like to say I like four foot on center studs for single story, the temple, which was MASSIVE, and weighed several hundred more tonnes than your shed will used two foot on center framing, with both inner, and outer plywood sheeting for shear strength. You can get away with four foot on center easily, most houses do that.

Build a truss for your second story's floor, I would advise not skimping here, and using 2x6 unless you are putting tools up there, then go for 2x8 (You can alternate if any heavy things will be spread across a large area, like shelving, or a lathe, but as a general rule you don't want more than 500 lbs per square foot on a 2x6 truss floor)

You can frame out the roof trusses yourself unless you live in an area with heavy snow, then you might investigate an engineered truss, or another solution.

I hope this was helpful, if you need diagrams, I can probably throw some together thursday if this thread is still alive.

that was very informative, thanks. I should clarify I don't do a lot of woodwork, just a little sculpting here and there like guitar necks and simple boards, so I don't know a lot of the terminology. I can google all that, though, so I'll do my best to understand. I won't be needing pillars for a shed so small. I would measure out the space in my backyard for you, but I'm vacationing and I don't get home for a bit. Diagrams whenever you can would be fantastic; any rough size will be good. Those would surely be helpful.

A commune in Wales built their own eco-village, sustained themselves for years on food they'd grown, solar power and selling crafts they'd made. A survey plane spotted their solar panels and reported the site. Becuase they had no approval from the authorities to build on the site, officials wanted to demolish the houses. After a long legal battle they were allowed to stay, based on .

I love the idea, but be aware that your property taxes will go through the motherfucking roof. A plain old garden shed will make your taxes go up, let alone something as awesome as you're proposing.

Not trying to dissuade you, just want to make sure you've budgeted for this.

property taxes? I can't believe I didn't really think of this. Property taxes are the worst IMO.. makes me want to the govt to fuck off, especially when you need to register pools and small buildings with electricity. I could avoid this problem altogether by powering my shed with solar panels and keeping under 120sq ft or something, am I right? The panels I can get for under <$75 from Harbor Freight, and if anyone else has suggestions that would be good too.

>> No.247885

>>247879

Also try to think about property value in general. Do people want to buy a house with a mass effect shed? Will they want to buy a house with a small 'guest house'/playroom? I think you know the answer. Not trying to shit on your idea, just remember to take that into account. The pic from your op is cute and it'd be hard to find someone who wouldn't see that as a bonus. A weird space house... not so much.

So keep in mind resellability. If it can be used as a guest room/play room/sun room/storage/greenhouse... you'll be better off.

>> No.247952

>>247885
although, if you're planning to move, and you don't think that the mass effect house will help you sell your place, you could always design the house on a sled system with utilities that can be easily unhooked, then take it with you when you move.

Just a thought.

There are ways around this usually.

Here you can get a way with it if the building doesn't have permanent unmovable foundations.

Build a home from a shipping container. The box will cost $2k refurbished. Add spray insulation, drywall, a wetroom (shower/toilet combo), a futon and a flat screen. Replace the doors at one end with floor to ceiling double pane glass & a glass door, put curtain inside. Collect rain from the roof, add a deck & awning for shade.

Take pictures every step.

I like this plan of action. If I can bring myself to dig up 2k (from my pockets), I will probably go someway with this and post the pics to /diy/
what say you anons?
I think I would put it on stilts or something, to avoid creating a permanent foundation.
