Every time I go to one of the places I own or the inlaws or other family I am always fixing their broken shit, why do people let this shit happen, fucking toilet damn near fell over when I went to shit and had to replace flange. Anyone else deal with family that doesn't do routine maintenance or just let's shit go?

Vast majority of people under 50 do fuck-all for maintenance. Boomers were assholes but they at least grew up in an age where it was expected that you would do upkeep and maintenance of things. That's why "asking dad how to fix it" was a thing. Disposable Chinese products have fostered a culture of neglect.

Roman concrete is an interesting case because the magic ingredient only comes from a few special places (volcanoes, and only the right kind of volcanoes). So it makes sense that most of the world would have no use for it.

This is how things are. Whenever I go home to visit family every 8 months or so, I have to spend the first few days fixing everything from vehicles to toilets to electrical.

Never used this, I usually just stack 2 wax rings.

Used to be me. I started telling people "if you can't fix it (or afford the repair), you shouldn't own it". I'm happier for doing it (it=saying no).

Seems like a boomer thing. My parents buy shit and just leave it, sometimes outside, for years at a time.

Houses are disposable. In Japan they never fix shit and when the house gets rickety they just bulldoze it and build a new one.
