Wonderful job there Buddy...

Get an old toothbrush wet with isopropyl alcohol. Scrub the crud & flux off!

Couple of those connections should be touched up a bit.

First time on a board that small?

OH GOD THAT'S HORRIFIC? WHAT DO YOU DO? DO YOU DIP THE FUCKING IRON IN SOLDER AND JUST SPREAD IT LIKE BUTTER?

>> No.209846

looks fucking awful but I probably couldn't do better

yeah but it was also done in haste. i am a relatively proficient solderer, i just didn't give a fuck about this. it's a logitech volume control unit for one of their cheap headsets.

I have braid, heat sinks, flux, 3rd hand with magnification etc, I just didn't feel like busting it all out to work on this.

Heat-shrink them wires, boy. Otherwise you'll have shorts. Not the best solder job i've seen, but it'll hold.
Also, what's with all the soldering threads lately?

I've got a question about soldering really small wires and whatnot... How do you hold the wire in place long enough to cool without it slipping away?

I find it very difficult to hold the board, hold the wire and hold the iron. Any tips?

meh... i've seen worse

jesus, my first soldering job was modding my Valve Jr. amp. With one of those cheap soldering irons for 10 bucks. I had to resolder a couple things...

I should take some pics of that when I get it back from my dad's place finally.

Erm... Hope you have a desoldering kit ready...

Make something to hold the board. If its small like the OP's a bulldog clip screwed to a block of wood works. Also good for holding plugs etc wile soldering.

yea, if i'm going to move forward with my aspirations of making a series of guitars and tube amps, I should probably get a decent soldering station at least, huh.
I got a 3rd hand, or whatever those are called. I used it to make a speaker attenuator circuit, and it helped a lot.

But hey, the Valve Jr works just fine. The mods were mainly on the newly installed pots, with only one capacitor trimmed and rerouted on the board. I think I got lucky that so much of it was off the board...

>DIP THE FUCKING IRON IN SOLDER AND JUST SPREAD IT LIKE BUTTER?

That actually sort of works when attaching wires to small pads. The wire will wick it off the iron and onto the pad.

Just get a third hand soldering station (google it). I got one of those for 6 euros and it's pretty useful :)

Or duct tape the iron to a 2 by 4 like I did :)

I think I saw that thread.

Care or not, you're going to get shorts the way those wires are.

>> No.211046

I used to get a big ball of window putty, stick it to my workbench and sthich the board to it. Solder away...

That's a good idea. The third-hand jigs seem like a good idea but I always end up swearing at them and giving up and holding 3 things in each hand and burning myself.
