My short-wave radio is arriving on Tuesday. Any tips? Also, short-wave general.

Don't skimp on your ground.

Tune to 3215 kHz between 2-3 AM EDT, awesome outlaw country music.

Turn down your RF gain before tuning through the CB/Freeband

Most pirates can be found between 6900-7000 kHz these days

I lolled hard.

Turn on your -20 dB attenuator if you have one before tuning to 27.025 mhz.

Depending on what you're looking for you might try a small loop antenna, and make notes of strongest signal direction. Then orient your longline correspondingly.

Otherwise, orient N/S and go as high and long as you can, and ground accordingly.
