When working with a stencil, spray from a distance and make short shots, don't hold it down for too long because it will drip behind the stencil boundaries. Always try to make stencils vertically so that the stencil is parallel with the ground, if you're doing stencils on walls or stuff, be even more careful so it won't drip.

i like stencils, used them a few times. my favourite of all time was a heart, about 6 inches tall by 4 inches wide. Used to use MTN94 to put a lime green backer on a wall, then leave for 10 minutes while it dried, then use the heart stencil with bright pink to give it some real pop.

just utterly does my nut seeing people using stencils instead of throwing up good things on walls.

no i just use an x-acto knife for all my stencils. I have about 400 stencils myself, keeps growing whenever i see a new one here. Just needing some motivation and some ideas, wanting something that will make my mates go "wow! you made that?!"

looks up the Silhouette HD, or any of those Silhouette cutters. It's a ladies scrapbooks-craft thing...well..no.

What it really is is a $250 CAD/vector die-cutter. Do your workups in illustrator or inkscape..autocad, whatever. Send to the silhouette and it'll slice it out of substrates up to...5mil or 7mil. You can get ones that have wider cutting mouths too.

I would suggest a Cricut, but you have to hack those.

is there any real art in this... you're taking another person's image, using software to turn it into a stencil, then using a machine to cut it into a stencil, then spraypainting it.

why not just print it out?

would say i'm a street artist. i dabble in it, but am taking the time to learn to draw/paint before putting something half arsed up. but so much of what i see is derivative clichéd trash now it's difficult to have much respect for street artists any more.

I'm not sure I like the whole Illustrator/Photoshop approach to making stencils at all. They always look... more computer-generated and tend to skimp out on a lot of details in images as well as create those god-awful hazy and jagged edges.

For myself, I print the photo out and trace over the important shadow bits with tracing paper and transfer that onto white paper, finally scanning it in and tracing that in Illustrator. The result is a lot better, getting rid of choppy lines and creating something that resembles the picture better.

But I guess that all depends on the whole purpose of said stencil.

I guess I need to ask the etiquette of this.

There's a sticker tagger around my area who just prints off his shit, all of which is taken from animation cell streets, and tosses up a crudely-drawn crown on top, occasionally with a little bit of 'deep' text on 'em. From what I know, claiming that you're a king when all you pull is that kind of bullshit is retarded, and calls for revenge.

So, how do I go about getting this dumbass to stop with his self-praise? I was considering simply tagging over his crowns with the Laughing Man logo, but I don't know if I'm committing the same mistake. This guy's stickers just really pisses me off, and the fact he's half-assing it so badly makes me want to do something.

Other options include some proper hand-drawn stickers, likely done in art deco to contrast his 'lol cartoons' stance, or pulling out a couple of the fake bronze statues I've made out of rebar, insulation foam, Bondo, and metal texturing paint.
