I need to excavate about 100 cubic metres of earth.
I'm going to hire an excavator and DIY
What's the best method to determine the excavator size I require?
This is of course more related to the excavation bucket which is attached to the digger
The closest thing I've found is this chart https://www.methvin.org/construction-production-rates/plant-productions/excavators-load-cycles
Even a mini excavator can reach down the 2m I need it to so that's no issue, however its largest bucket is 450mm which is 0.023 cubic metres which is 1/10th of the smallest unit on this chart
I an get a mini excavator at a really good price, but if it takes 5x as long then there needs to be some middle ground

>> No.1938705

get biggest you can fit onto site at reasonable price

>> No.1938708

you don't mention OP if you'll be hauling out the 100m3. the area available will dictate your production capability.. if you are hauling spoils then you have to provide room to stage the truck(s)* in / out. * fewer trucks hauling equals lower production, duh. if your not hauling spoils then your area will be compromised / reduced due to temporary retention of the spoils. you gotta figure out the logistics before your production cycles can be confirmed.

Noooooooooo you can't use proper tools to do a job and make it easier! That's not DIY!

You think the cycle time will be the same? Yeah if all you are doing is scooping up loose dirt then maybe, but actually digging and breaking up hard shit with a smaller bucket will be easier on the machine and faster too. Just will take more bucket fulls to remove the loose stuff after it is broken up. Really depends on the soil conditions more than anything.

Just get a cat 318. Bigger bucket and not a giant leap from a mini

it's on my acreage so I'm happy to dump the 100m3 in a pile and leave it be and I'll move it as needed, or maybe I'll never move it
>>1939428
hopefully it's all dirt, I don't think there'll be rocks, if there is I'm fucked in general for what I'm digging for
>>1938855
oh shit I've been rumbled...

maybe I'll call some hire places and see what they suggest

I know you want to DIY this, but most of the time you need an op license to even rent any heavy machinery. Plus, if you've ever seen a skilled operator in action, you know how fast and efficient they can be compared to a relatively unskilled operator.

valid point however in my context here in australia you don't need a licence for excavators

also I partly want to DIY it because it'll be fun and I'll get to operate an excavator

financially, yes.. totally better to hire a pro and have it done in an afternoon.
but fuck, doesn't sound it found to play around with real-life sized tonka trucks??

If you hire a pro, you can ask him to let you have a go during his lunch break so you can play around but don't have to do any of the real work.

So here's the thing.
>Floor tiles are wasted away
>floor tile change is too hard and expensive
found out asphalt is pretty cheap and lasting material, how hard would it be to remove all the tiles and repalce them with a thin layer of asphalt (around 3cm thick).
What do you think? I need to replace the tiles from the kitchen, bathroom and living room. They amount for about 40 square meters.

So I called an excavator hire place and the guy told me a 1.5 ton excavator would be fine for 110 cubic metres
a> he's telling the truth
b> he misheard me say 10 cubic metres
c> he really wanted to hire me a 1.5 ton excavator because that's the only size they carry
