Bathroom vent fan no longer spinning. I noticed the fan wouldnt rev up fully or would make a sort of humming noise. I decided removd the cover to dust it out with compressed air and vacuumed it. I wanted to see if that helped so i brought the power back and now it wont spin. I notice it makes a buzzing noise. Why wont it spin?

My oven hood exhaust fan does the same thing.
My assumption is I need to replace the fan.

Could it be the capacitor is bad?

Oil it there are 2 bronze bushings that have wool soaked in oil surrounding them. they dry up. They should be oiled about every 2 years (depending on use). a 20 weight non detergent oil would work fine. zoom spout, blue label 3-in-1 or even extra heavy mineral oil from your pharmacy would work.

>>1910212
these do not often have a capacitor.

WD 40 is not oil. it needs oil on the bushings. so use oil. about 10 drops in each bearing (at least).

Ok its back in and sounds nice and powerful almost like a jet. It does kinda leave a vibration but ill chalk it up as the ducting's fault.

>It does kinda leave a vibration but ill chalk it up as the ducting's fault.

no, its vibrating because the blades are off balance. probably some dust on one of them or or you bent one trying to fix it... the duct doesnt cause vibration, a running motor will

goddamn you are fucking dumb

WD40 is not a lubricant, it's a water displacement spray, meant to keep stuff from rusting, not for lubricating.

Calling people dumb when you're clearly fucking stupid.
A bent blade doesn't change the weight so how would a blade all of a sudden change its weight and how would you be balance it.....pro tip you're a fucking tard

>> No.1910687

>>1910683
Weight matters and its distance from the axis of rotation does too. If you tied two bricks to two strings and twirled them around it would be fine if the strings are the same length. But if the two strings are very different in length the long one will want to rotate slower than the short one. This causes an imbalance of rotational forces. Causing wobble and vibration.

>> No.1910689

>>1910687
Almost forgot. If you bent the pitch more or less than the other blades it would have less or more drag on it. This drag imbalance would imbalance the forces acting on the shaft which would eventually cause the shaft to bend one way or the other. This bend would cause the vibration.

This is a great thread.

>My fan won't spin, what's wrong?
>You need to oil the bearings.
>I just put WD40 and it works.
>WD40 isn't oil and won't lubricate it for long, you need to use oil.
>Nope, it's back in and works great. It vibrates though because of the duct
>No it vibrates because you fucked up the blades.
>Nuh uh!

I love the threads where someone asks for advice and not only ignores any advice given but berates those who are being helpful.

Trust these anons, OP.

Or don't, whatever.

I've gone down this road. I'm guessing somewhere between 3 days and 2 weeks (depending on how much the fan is run) you'll be taking it back apart because it can only get going so fast then vibrate itself too slow to do its job (and start overheating as a result). When it sounds like you're grinding a kazoo, you'll know you should have just put oil on the bearings the first time.

Why does everyone say this when a motor doesn't work? Isn't the capacitor just so you don't pay a premium for electricity because it's out of phase?

Yes, because as I said it is oil diluted in white spirit or similar shit, that evaporates.
>leaves behind hardly any oil at all.
Enough oil for most sliding and gliding that isn't really loaded. Fan is exactly this.
>it is NOT a good lubricant.
Yes, but do you really want to disassemble fan, disconnect it, remove somehow the rotor, oil the bushings with some plain mineral oil (or engine oil, or grease), and then put it all back? Or just squirt generously WD-40, which will flow in seam between shaft and bearing no problem and provide adequate lubrication for years to come?
It will also clean dirt and gunk from there to some extend.
I did this on kitchen hood like 10 years ago, shit still spins normally.

You don't want to use WD-40 on expensive shit like air conditioner (compressor), car engine... Some shitty fan - no problem

Removing screws that are tightened so hard under ceiling is kinda annoying.

>> No.1911240

The fan and housing just snap into the outer housing. Greasing a bushing is temporary at best and virtually impossible. Wd 40 isn't oil it's for water displacement and thin to get into rusted areas. Pop the fan assembly out and try cleaning. Since they are made to ingest humid air more than likely it's toast Buy a new one and snap it into the old housing and shut these retards up

>> No.1911539

>>1911206
wd-40 is an absolutely terrible lubricant for fans. it's too thin, it evaporates, it will run out too quickly. 15 to 20 weight oil is what is used and works best. if you lube it with oil it's good for several year. with wd40 it may work but for not very long.

fan collectors know what works best and what does not.

>>1911219
grease will not go through the bronze bearings which are permeable to oil.

>>1911240
>Greasing a bushing is temporary at best and virtually impossible.
ah the spoutings of someone who has no idea what they are talking about. I have oiled over 20 fans some of which were exhaust fans. it requires a small amount of effort and the results last for years.

man up and properly oil the fan.
