Useful. Whether or not it’s useful enough to EDC, that’s a different story. If you buy a $10 flea market Chinesium one, it’s not worth the weight, but something like a Leatherman Wave with a bit driver, locking knife, one-handed operation, and just enough tools without being too bulky will make you think they’re not memes

Always have a multitool on me, every day for 15 years in multiple countries on two continents.
They aren't useful for specialized tasks, if you need to fix your engine its only useful for a few screws and hose clamps. But I take things apart, put things together, electrical work etc with one every day.
Having one has saved my bacon more than once and having it in your pocket costs nothing and is well worth it.

>> No.1901017

Meme.
Knife is probably the only thing on it some what useful, and even then, a utility knife is better suited for the tasks you'd use a multitool knife for.
Everything else just sucks. In a pinch where if weight/bulk is of critical importance to lower, then it's worth while. But when I can carry a small side pouch with an 11n1, one medium-small channel lock, one medium-large channel lock, dykes, and a dedicated flathead driver/pry bar, that's far better and can actually get shit done quickly. Only time I bother to rock just the multitool is absolutely tight places where I won't even be able to reach to my pockets/side of my body. As in a crawl where I hold it in my hand as I crawl over to where I need to be and open it up with hands in front of me once I get to the spot. That happens rarely, and usually when it does, I find myself wishing I had an 11n1 in one hand and a utility knife in the other.

When I was a 13 year old skateboarder, a "skate tool" and a leatherman were the only tools I owned.
And I loved the fuck out of that leatherman, I used it for everything, because I didnt know any better and because I didnt do any actual work.

Im an adult now, I still have several multitools but they sit in a drawer getting 0 use. And I can not think of one single time where I sat and thought "If only I had carried a leatherman with me, that would have been very useful!"

But you shouldnt be surprised, in a day and age where KipKay projects are all the rage, multi tools are as popular as ever.

I have used the saw to cut PVC, to fabricate parts out of wood and plastic, cutting groves etc, and OJ used his to decapitate his white ex wife.

I use the scissors almost daily. I use them for trimming my nails and for repairing my fingertips when they split from zinc drying them out handling galvanized and from drying out wearing welding gloves. But they are razor sharp and cut precisely for years.

Just wear a tool belt with 2 channies, 6 in 1 screwdriver, a utility box knife and a pair of diagonal cutters/tin snips. You can then drive the most common fasteners, grab, cut, and slice. Most guys also carry a set of impact sockets with a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter and you're good with an impact.

If I were going for something which fits in my pocket, utility knife, 6 in 1 screwdriver, those pocket sized 7 inch knipex (a pair), and maybe a pair of dykes

You carry it around in case you need it, it's an emergency tool which is also useful for 90% of stupid jobs around the house.
Grandmother called today complaining her freezer was making a loud noise, never carry anything else except for the leatherman, just pop three screws, stab the the ice around the fan with the knife, put cover back, done. No need to carry random tools and lose them somewhere.
The same morning I had to go pick up some 3mm MDF to change the bottom on some old drawers, the board was too big to fit in my car, but with the tiny saw I cut it in half in a minute. Without my leatherman I would've had to go to the "cut your stuff" station, where there's a saw tied with a 3' cable to the wall, missing more teeth than uncle Cletus after his 4th relapse, and spend 6 or 8 minutes before finally deciding to kick the board in half because there are 3 more people in line who probably don't even own a saw and won't buy one because "it's just for cutting this, besides I saw one at the entrance"
Just buy it, stick it in your glovebox, you won't use it for actual work, but a shitty tool is better than no tool or a tool tied with a cable to the wall.

In guessing the Anon you replied to is Australian. We aren’t legally allowed to carry knives without a good reason which prohibits normal multi tools from being EDC. I use one with a knife because it is not difficult to anticipate when you will need it and in situations that you will probably need it it is usually legal to carry. You have to beg and plead for protection against the wilderness that so many live by, and you are now shielded from the dreaded shooting statistics that happen in dense poor areas that dont even exist in your country.

Seems like its working out great, a place that didnt have much gun violence in the first place still has no gun violence.

I don't know which car you drive, but mine has given me 0 problems during many years. The worst case was a flat battery. Useful. Maybe only a couple times a year depending on what you do. It's not a workshop tool, its for when you're out somewhere and need one of those tools. The scissors on mine see more use than anything else. Usually a stray thread on my shirt or something.

>a go with these
Are you talking about some little 2x AA electric screwdriver? That one anon posted is brushed, but the Fuel 12V drills and impacts are beasts. I mean I have brushed Ridgid 12V and I barely ever have to reach for the 18V drill and impact driver unless I start drilling through thicker metal or I’m dealing with >1/2” nuts and bolts that haven’t moved in years,

I love the little 12V stuff , I would shill that to homeowners all the time if it weren’t for the limitations with saws and such, but the M12 sawzalls look great for pruning.

No tools < chink multitool < Leatherman < real tools

The only question is, how much room do you have for tools? Are you planning on carrying a toolbox today? If not, you may wish to slip a knife/saw/pliers/screwdriver/tweezers gizmo into your pants pocket. Duh

12v Milwaukees. Not fuels though. I just prefer the 18v makitas because they screw stuff in faster.

They're great for military. Guy I knew had to yell for my leatherman to fix a problem but couldn't wait so he just pulled mine out of my holster since both of my hands were busy fixing another problem (you can make gay jokes I don't care)

Basically if you're walking around and want to stay light and can't stay within 30 seconds of a tool box they're really useful. Gotta be high quality though.

Also they're more convenient than digging through a toolbox if you live in an apartment and need to keep everything packed tightly into one tool box.

>Are you planning on carrying a toolbox today?

What does this mean?
Any actual /diy/er has a toolbox in his car. Believe it or not it doesnt take much room to fit a fucking pair of pliers and a screwdriver in your car.

If you are at work, and know you have actual work to do, then yes you are carrying your tool bag with you.

If you arent at work, and you arent at home, where exactly are you where you need pliers and a saw in your pocket?
The ole "I need my saw at walmart" shtick.

Where would that be anon?

>Also they're more convenient than digging through a toolbox if you live in an apartment and need to keep everything packed tightly into one tool box.
This is 100% true, and exactly why multi tools are popular. Because retards who have no tools and arent handy or /diy/ at all buy them to feel special and handy.
For a lot of these people its literally the only pair of pliers they own.

Military fags may need one to break their fucking rifle down and field clean it while overseas. Use it for whatever horse shit that might happen when killing brown people for oil.
Great for them.

Once they do their 3 years of pushing a broom on a base and get out, they dont actually have a need to carry one anymore.

Mutli tools are made to be light duty for light quick jobs.
Why exactly would you be afraid of stamping, when using screws just get loose all the time?
They both have similar warranties, and they are both going to sit on your desk and on your belt not doing a single thing its whole life. So who cares?

He's in every multi-tool thread, if you're here more than a month he's easy to spot. Last time it became, "I'm making a list of all the inane reasons for even carrying a multi-tool in the first place!" Then he proceeded to argue with about three anons as if they were all one guy. That's how intelligent he is, take his opinions with a seriously big grain of salt.

Like the real ones with like 6 or 8 tools on them? Sure, super handy in everyday situations. I mean why would you not want a bottle opener and screw driver on you at all times? Is your day that predictable and boring?

Anything with like 20 tools is a gimmick for collectors

/out/ here, I use a leatherman wave+ when camping and it's fine. The saw and file are pretty great when trapmaking, and the pliers work okay for fishing too.

simple, i have used mine when out fishing or on my motorcycle, i.e. times when I'm not near my car (which does have a toolbox), and can't carry much/anything.
example - i need to remove one of those hose clips that you have to squeeze with pliers.
they are a meme, but they do have a use, in a pinch.
