Do you guys tell your sons about the houses you've worked on?

>> No.1849638

My dad used to tell me about doing drugs and living in the houses he was working on while they were under construction. He died ripping copper out of a live power transformer station, btw.

My dad worked for GM for like 30 years and was involved in designing various things on a number of cars. He would point out cars he had worked on and say something like “Don’t buy that piece of shit. I know the guy who designed this or that and he’s a fucking retard.” He complained a lot about having to work within really shitty constraints and management always meddling with shit they don’t understand. He only ever drove Japanese cars.

My dad was a pipefitter (now a PM about to retire) and does this whenever we’re driving around Boston. The sense of pride of having wrought out of steel and iron a colossus of a skyscraper is something I think a lot of young men need and it would probably help the country overall if it was more common.

But yeah, let’s subsidize kids going $40,000+ into debt to get some worthless cubicle job, if that.

I’m a young retard sparky apprentice and I always hear supers and PMs on jobsites talking about how they came up like that. They cut their teeth in a trade and then somehow they finagled their way into an office job or a supervisory role. How do I do this, do I have to stop being retarded or do I have to suck the right dicks?

My mom will never forgive me for working construction. She is always upset over it. Her friends brag about how their children have degrees, and she feels inferior. She lectures about how I need to go back to school if I want to "become something" at least once a week. I've been thinking about it just to shut her up.

My father built half the swimming pools in this 100.000+ population city. Reinforced concrete. My sister and later me made the pixel-art style "mosaics" out of these 2.5cm (~1inch) glass tiles that are used to tile the inside of the pools. 90%+ were boring stuff, dolphins, compass rose, soccer team shields. But every now and then there would be a custom project. Like the tasmanian devil from the Looney Toons, or the Sol de Mayo. It was a challenge to cram these down to a 200x200 cm (6.5x6.5 feet) canvas (remember, each pixel was 2.5 cm, and there was 1mm grouting in between).

It takes his team about 3 weeks to build one regular sized pool (3x6 meters, 0.9 to 1.6 meters deep). He remembers every single owner, sometimes they moved and the new owners called him to perform maintenance (almost nobody that can afford a pool cares to overwinter it, many prefer to pay to have a rodent removed from the skimmer basket, upgrading to saline electrolytic chlorination+automated pH correction, etc) and those he remembers too. He gets all of his business by word of mouth and previous clients that moved. Once, just once, he gave out cards. He got calls from the outer side of the country. I don't even.

We don't have a swimming pool or even a garden.

PM can be one of the worst jobs in construction bar none. If shit goes south and a job goes tits-up, it’s all on you. However, if you develop relationships with 1 or 2 supers that are competent and only work with them it’s the easiest job in the world.

Also, a lot of kids get degrees in “construction management”, fuck that. I’d take any motivated journeyman over a degree no question, and the majority of companies would too. The question is do you really want to take on the responsibility. It is the first step in owning your own company, you just need to know whether the circumstances are right to roll the dice.

My dad would always talk about orchards or dairies he worked at. I do the same and talk about cattle or crops when ever I have the chance. On one hand it's shame I will never experience labor like he did, on the other hand, I don't want to end up like everyone else in my family that has ruined knees, sprain legs, decapitated fingers. I prefer my limp wristed office job while working on personal projects during the weekend.

Feel ya. My parents always thought I would do something arts-related. But being stuck in the bottom end of the middle class is not something I aspired.
So I became an Industrial mechanic and later studied mech.eng. because the company paid for it. Before university I Had to hear the same sermon. Luckily Uni was very hands-on. Worked 3 years as a Sales engineer but the company was doomed and I hated pushing pencils for 8h straight.

Rant-end/

Only do it, If you plan in using the degree.
Accept that Most other students are aliens compared to sb wo worked in the Trades.
A friend of mine is a Independent window Installer, makes ca 120k/ year and still has to bear the bullshit of :" The neighbours girl studied ..."
Yeah she studied politics. Congrats dir getting a bullshit-degree

Nothing he said is incorrect, and I say that as someone who works in commercial construction.
