Hey, y’all first time posting. I have two wood pallets a gas station let me have and I’m wondering if they’re safe or not to use for making a raised garden. Can y’all help me out?

You might be able to tell how the pallet was prepared when it was made based on marking on the pallet. That is assuming it wasn't recycled and re-treated with god knows what during that process.

That said, you will likely never be able to tell what it was used for during its life. What was stored on it? What was spilled on it? What was it cleaned with (some placed fumigate imported pallets with harsh chemicals)? Most importantly, what nasty shit was on the floor of all the places where it rested on the ground?

Wood is cheap. Really, it is. You will probably spend more on fasteners for most projects then you will on wood. You can make a decent raised garden bed using fence boards and 2x4s.

I was reading somewhere that the red and blue painting can also be bad is that true? Both appear to have the HT label although one doesn’t have the official stamp from that organization that approves this stuff

painted pallets are usually painted to signify who owns them, I'd avoid taking them 2bh, there's plenty of non painted KD and HT pallets to go around.
One trip to the local warehouses fills my entire truck to the top of the cab with HT/KD pallets, and the security doesn't even care, we even just talked for a little and I explained to him how pallets are labeled kek.

What's the underside of the red pallet look like? Seems like it's missing some boards and others are damaged. I'd replace those before using it.

You can do anything you want with this monster. I've worked in various warehouses and these ones were always reserved for all the heavy duty shit. That will definitely support a garden.

Valid point. In that case, let’s say in only able to work with these two pallets I got, could I simply wash them, wrap them up with cut out black trash bags, and use them then?
