Try mineral spirits first to not damage the wood. Work up to a paint and finish stripper if Mineral spirits don't do the trick.
It's sad that only the elites and enthusiasts will know the joys of fingerboxing in the future. We all decry the cheap Chinese fingerboxes, but they're a good entry point for those new to the hobby.

Modern mass-produced fingerboxes are nowhere near as good as the old bespoke wooden ones. Pic related, I bought this plastic piece of shit for the relatively cheap price of $300 off Alibaba the other month and it's already stopped working. I knew I should have spent the extra several hundred dollars and gotten one made by an expert from traditional materials.

I'd just sand it. 800-1200 grit should be solid finish. Dye based ink would probably show off more of the grain than a acrylic paint.

long answer: same as everything on this site. good amount of ironic posters and some unironic posters attracts a shitload of unironic posters. ironic posters think it's still ironic and feed the fire. ratio changes exponentially quickly as the site gets more publicity.
