Need help /diy/
I'm interested in building a generator, specifically pedal powered. I have no experience with this kind of shit. Any tips on where to get started or do you have a guide?

The most difficult part is making sure you have a generator/alternator/motor that will output enough volts to just get over the voltage of your battery/battery array. If you have a 12v battery you want to charge then you need to output a STEADY 14.5v to 15v from your bike. Once you find a generator/alternator/motor that can do this for you, you'll need to find out the RPMs you need to pedal at to maintain this perfect speed. If your generator/alternator/motor runs too fast and outputs too many volts, you can use resistors to reduce it down to the level needed if you are maintaining a higher RPM on your bike. That way you can pedal and get either exercise or pedal at least fast enough to make pedaling worthwhile.

One good place to research is on instructables.com just do a few different searches for the same project. Read the comments too as they contain lots of good info.

>you'll need to find out the RPMs you need to pedal at to maintain this perfect speed.

Internally regulated automotive alternators will maintain a steady 14v even as the speed of the engine driving them varies from 800rpm to 8000. They usually have capacities somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 amps (although ones out of older cars with minimal electronics can be as low as 40a). It's common for the alternator's pulley on a car to give at least a 3:1 overdrive ratio, so if you want reliable power out of one you want to get it rigged up to spin somewhere between 2,500-2,5000 rpm - a pretty wide target band.

Why? All you have to do is get it overdriven somewhere between 40:1 and 400:1 vs pedal speed, and that's not very hard. They're purpose-built to generate electricity at a wide range of RPM, and have little inertia or drag when there's no load on them (other than their tiny cooling fan). There's no risk of overloading them, as a human would be lucky to drive one at 25% capacity without totally grinding to a halt.

They are the cheapest and most common purpose-built small generators in the world. They are absolutely everywhere. You can easily salvage one from a junk car, or go to a major chain self-service junkyard and get one for $24. They are very compact and very efficient - automakers have poured tons of money into making sure the alternator isn't costing them an extra 0.1 mpg on their CAFE, so they can keep dodging the gas-guzzler tax.

It's a vastly more efficient option than trying to wind your own or converting a discarded motor.

WHERE TO GET STARTED:

A highly trsianed elite athlete can put out 1/3 HP in short bursts. Yoi know what thta's oing to do? LIGHT ONE GODDAMNE DLIGHT BULB.

bicycle generatior: Don;t be a fucking moron. pedal for six fucking hourrs and charge one cell phone.

Jesys can any of you do basic math? BRAINS MOTHEFUSCKER FDO YOU HAVE THEM?

I just wanted to say that it's not a very good idea, is all. Yes, it will work to some extent but as far as producing electricity for any serious purposes (charging car battery, TV, etc) it's not going to do much.

With a small enough generator it might charge a phone, or let you listen to radio while you work out. Though I suppose car alternator might do if modified to limit the current (or else it will be to hard to turn it) and coupled with a capacitor bank rather then battery.

If you want to maintain this for any actual practical purpose I'd recommend rigging a bike up to an air compressor pump instead. This way you can just save pressurized air and later use it to generate electricity. This is what a lot of wind farms do to store energy.

>> No.181204

the thing is, human can generate about 200W top (from what I've heard) and that is 200W at some serious pedaling.
with voltage regulator and automotive alternator you can get steady charging voltage, but! if you assume total efficiency at let say 50% you got only 100 Watts from your "hard as fuck pedaling" it won't be enough to power your tv :P
