Kek I was just reading about this, I'd love to make hand blown light bulbs some time. I'm just afraid I'll need a lot of specialised equipment for it and my space is limited (not an apartment but just a very small house with a small patio and a closet-sized shed)

What specialised equipment did you buy/get?

a kiln and a torch kit from mountain glass cost me like 2200 with shipping which is a lot 190 with liftgate service.
you can do it in an apartment you just need to buy a big exhaust fan and build a metal box to work it with the air getting sucked outside.
im building my bench next week when I get more money. lampwork is not cheap but if you got a little skill it can pay back quick

oh and I bought my oxy tank for 200 instead of leasing for 90 a year already had a bbq tank of propane

How does it pay back? I was looking into it as a hobby, thinking there isn't much of a market for this. How do you make money from it? Genuinely interested

make pipes
market vary on location if there are a lot of other lampworkers or not like if your on the west coast its harder

I live in the Netherlands, I don't believe it's very popular here. Lots of tinted glass/glass in lead artists but not many glass blowers at all.

But now I'm not sure if I understand what you make. Are they pipes, like stems in chemical glassware or smoking pipes?

I see, I didn't know the 'lamp' in 'lampworking' referred to the torch, I thought you literally made lamps

Kiln should have info on programming the controller. A good move is to set it for a 3 hour soak at 1050 and if you are still working when it starts ramping down just turn switch off/on and reset the cycle. When you are done you just leave it running and it will anneal your work.

Good luck on that "making money" thing market is completely flooded and imports dominate the low end where newbs used to be able to make money.

smoking pipes and your in a decent location to do
then you can pursue making what you want to for fun and there is a market for weird stuff made of glass. people buy anything glass you just have to market it

I have a few shops around me that only buy usa made glass and from talking to do them if my spoons are solid they would give me 5-10 a piece more for color work. I like to go to the cupboard and look at all the salt pieces they have

>> No.1771057

>>1771056
Cheap color starts at $40/lb and lots of it won't work on the surface. Start with these basic colors: cobalt, ruby red (elvis is a good one) and my all time favorite: Amber-purple. Really you shouldn't mess with color until you can make a clear piece repeatedly and have a good success rate. Work on fundamentals and no fuming until you get ventilation.

>> No.1771058

>>1771057
venting is my next thing to do I already bought a 1k cfm exhaust fan I just need to save a little more so I can get some sheet metal and plywood to cover the floor in my basement spot and build a bench with hood for kiln and torch.

>> No.1771060

I'd take a lesson with a glassblower whos work doesn't have to be amazing just consistent. Lots will let you spend a afternoon with them for $50 and some beer.

>> No.1771837

just made my first 2 shitty spoons ever pics coming in about 3 hours when the kilns done
they are lumpy weird shaped bowls but I made them. now im starting to get a feel for what I need to do. getting the blow hose was a big help too it makes popping the holes super easy. it made it little harder to shape because I think im trying to blow to soon before I had the time coming out the flame to my mouth

thanks for the annealing chart funny enough mountain glass sent me basically the same sheet I just lost it in the torch manual lol
