How do I fix this leaking stopcock?

I cant tighten the gland because it's just a circle, not a hexagon

I tried to pack some PTFE tape in there but it still isnt working

>> No.1764419

huh, idk it wouldn't be something you tighten if it was just a circle though, would it?

JFC you need to replace those pipes

>> No.1764428

>>1764423
Agreed.
On the backside of the valve that's a lead pipe with a lead "ball" connection.

Also I've seen valves just like that one, in 1880's built houses. When the bonnet packing goes... They're fucked.
I'd say replace the valve.
Of course good luck trying to pack a modern replacement valve onto a lead pipe

OP, grip your asscheeks and call a plumber.

>> No.1764435

I agree with the others, when something looks that goddamn crusty its time for a full on replacement, not a quick fix.

Agreed, I'm just looking for a quick fix until the plumber arrives.

House was built in 1922 so I assume everything in the pic is 98 years old. What cost am I looking at do you think?

in my neck of the woods plumbers charge $50-to-$100 just to come out and look at the problem, costs past that ??? don't know. Up to the plumber, really.

Going to need replacing all the way back to where you connect into the water main. Easy job, the pain in the arse is digging the old pipe out/trench for the new.

Fellow brit i presume? That looks like a very similar sight that i have in my house.

It doesn't look like a dangerous leak going on, would not just draping towels around it until a plumber can attend work?

I guess just gripping onto it with some mole grips or aligators might work. Make sure you have access to and the tools to use your shutoff in the street before fucking with a stopcock though

Ignore the plebs saying you need to remove the lead piping, it's hardly a problem and even if you deem it worth doing, you're into high thousands to mole out and replace the incomer from the street.

string a bucket under it. also have you never heard of vice grips?

alternatively grind 2 sides flat and put a normal ass open end wrench (not adjustable you idiot) over it.

worst you can do is bust everything to bits, get yourself a full on flood emergency and an emergency tier plumber bill.

Just buy a garden tap and unscrew & swap over the top part - handle, bib & washer. It's just a standard plumbing fitting.

Those are the joints. The lead would be melted there, fusing two parts together

>>1767035
Wow that's actually a very neat job. Surprised plumbers even still take on real lead jobs, I guess here in NL they would all but refuse and tell you you need to tear out the lead.

>> No.1767074

i don't like the idea of drinking water out of lead pipes.

Its not that bad, especially old lead pipes have thick corrosion layers on the inside, preventing most of the lead contamination.

That's essentially what he said. Upon first viewing he said "I cant touch the lead, but if the old tap screws out easily then I can put a new one in"

>> No.1767144

>>1767079
It's more scaling than corrosion. Corrosion would probably be even worse as you'd have lead salts dissolving in the water.

OP is lucky plumber had a bonnet and stem assembly for that old-ass valve, put him on your Christmas card list...he could have jacked you big bucks by condemning it for the rebuild.

>> No.1767918

>>1767103
Thing is thats total shit. They sell lead to copper transition couplings in any half decent plumbers merchants. LeadLock and Philmac are 2 manufacturers of the top of my head. Also the scalle build up on the internal walls of the lead pipe protect lead leaching into the water so is perfectly safe to drink too. Yes it should be getting replaced where possible but not an urgency.

OP is in UK so everything is still using old-ass units & threads, so a brand-new off the shelve valve would fit anything from the 1960's on.
