I had a treadmill I bought for about $800 and it lasted many years. When it died I couldn't afford another good one, so I decided on an exercise bike:

I highly recommend a bike. Quiet, no power needed, great workout, takes up less space.
For the cost of a good $1000 treadmill you could pay for 100 months of planet fitness!
