HD: Milwaukee, DeWalt, Makita, Ridgid, Ryobi
Lowes: DeWalt, Bosch, Hitachi, Kobalt, Craftsman

Electrical
HD: Klein, Lutron
Lowes: Southwire, LeGrand

Measurement
HD: Empire, Husky
Lowes: Lufkin, Komelon, Swanson

Overall, I HD has better brands. I shop at both because I find that Lowes has better quality selection of items I can't find at HD. If Lowes could carry Knipex again, and have another Power Tool brand like Makita and Lutron, that would really even up the game.

The lithium ion cells that power all modern cordless tools have a higher no-load voltage than they do when being used. Five of them in series have either 20V or 18V depending on how they're measured. Different brands use 18 or 20V to refer to the same operational voltage. DeWalt, for example, uses the 20V label in part to distinguish those tools from the older "18V" nickel-cadmium-based batteries. Three lithium ion cells in series supply either 12V or 10.8V depending on the methodology as above, but most everyone calls them "12V" batteries and tools.
