my grandfather gave me some old peg board and i have to say, im in love with this concept. But he only had a few pieces, I went to buy some more and mother of god why the hell is this stuff so expensive? Is there any reason why I couldn't just, take some ply wood or similar material and just drill holes in it and then attach it to a simple frame to achieve the same functionality?

You would be completely unable to replicate the precision drilled holes or the proper thickness of the board.

With a CNC machine you could , by hand though it would probably wind up looking like shit and take forever

You need to Google hole jigs, or something like "how to drill holes for an adjustable shelf," then use your imagination and multiply by two.

I did a few rows of holes in 1/4" ply and there was a ton of tear out.

>> No.1708438

>>1708433
Tear out is easy to overcome by having wood in contact with your workpiece at the back where the drill bit comes through.

Just buy a sheet at home depot. Time is infinity more valuable than the $2 """"savings"""" you would gain via a nightmare of trying to make your own.

Says the guy who thinks pegboard is expensive?
>time can be used to make money
>time spent on non-moneymaking things means that it cannot be used to make money, or on other things that mean MORE than money to you
>time drilling your own holes to make pegboard has an opportunity cost expressible in dollars
>"time is money" for the economically illiterate
Do the math on the time you would need for layout and drilling, and compare it to the difference in price between pegboard and regular hardboard. Express this in dollars per hour, and consider how much your time is worth.

Have you ever used pegboard? The accessories have little hooks that go through the holes and catch on the back side. Standard pegboard thicknesses are 1/8" and 1/4", and the wrong accessories either won't fit at all or won't be secure. Hole spacing doesn't matter for single hook things, but most accessories have two, and if the spacing is wrong, they won't fit. The required precision isn't difficult, but it is tedious. The board in OP has 512 holes and almost a thousand gaps with maybe a 1/16" tolerance. So a 1/32" location tolerance on the holes.

you can use a piece of pegboard and put it on top of 1/4 ply and use it a a template to drill holes in the plywood. simple as fuck.

Brilliant, now instead of having to buy a pegboard you can buy plywood... and a pegboard... spend five hours of your life, and en up with a ruined piece of pegboard and plywood!

No you return the pegboard because it was defective and the holes were all ragged.

A pharmacy in my area was renovating and had a stack of pegboard 4 feet high out back. I asked if I could have some and they said sure. The sheets were 4 feet by 8 feet, brown on one side and off white on the other. I only took half of them as the others were damaged. Mostly in the corners. I put them on CL for $10 a sheet and sold all the ones I didn't keep for myself in a week. I should have taken the whole stack but I still make a shitton of money for free.

I would rather spend $9.91 on a 48x24 inch sheet of peg board and a 10 minute trip to home depot than waste 5 hours of my time that I could spend masturbating to anime girls to build a shitty, less accurate sheet of pegboard.

At Home Depot, that size of pegboard is only $3.50 more than the same size of hardboard.
