Let's say you want to buy something -- machining gear, welding gear, carpentry gear, 3d printing, etc, and you intend to use it to make money, what would you get provided you have the skill and knowledge required in that field?

I'm gonna go with some type of on-demand etching/engraving machine

Mitre saw

Use the leftover money to make a home made drill press, bandsaw and scrollsaw and then build a workshop/reno a big trailer into a personal shop

>2000
That's not enough for anything really.
You could do appliance repair or basic automotive repair, but youd be in over your head pretty fast with a budget that small.
2000 gets you nothing realistically.

just buy some metal wire snips and galvanized mesh and start making gabions

rich people love them and will literally pay thousands for a gabion fence, wall, mailbox, anything...

Only 2k will probably not get you too far.
I'd probably set up an electronics lab to design and sell stuff on demand, since the equipment is relatively cheap and I already have most of it, sadly I still lack the skills to be competitive.

It's not very helpful to think about just buying tools "to make money with". You should start with an idea for a viable business then get the required tools, not just buy generally useful tools and hope someone will pay you to use them.
Personally, I have a few ideas that I'd need a resin 3d printer and a table saw to make a little money with

1. Buy a hot dog cart and a business permit.
2. Go downtown every lunch with 10 for $1 packages of hot dogs.
???
3. In 5 years, buy a food truck

My roommate did this. On the weekends he would take his cart down to bars and sell hot dogs to people waiting to go in.

During the day he also had a carpet cleaning business with the local banks and offices. He would clean their windows, shampoo their rugs, and do their landscaping. He was a 1 stop shop.

He paid his tuition in full, and bought a truck. By the time he graduated, he was almost ready to buy his first house. In cash.

Maybe your far better off than I am when it comes to electronics, but in /ohm general one of the recommended books is Mims III Electronics and it's honestly really good so far.

Care to elaborate? That's a fairly odd mixture of machinery there

3D printers. Go around printing things for people.
If you have more than one, you can print more things at the same time. You'll probably not make your money back, but you'll have years of fun.

Any cheap used saw that will cut granite. Some good blades and polishing pads, and the deposit on a small rented premesis. Build a local social media presence and produce my own kitchen worktops. The whole service, from templating And removing old tops, through the fabrication and installation. I already do this, but I'm just lining someone else's pocket.

I would also consider getting some printing gear when the opportunity presented itself. I feel that there's milage in producing counterfeit employee discount cards and ID's, loyalty stickers etc for popular chains. As a test i recently bought on ebay, some McDonalds loyalty coffee card stickers and resold them on facebook while I was at my inlaw's caravan for the weekend. I sold out and made £200 profit. People love fraud is what I've learned.

>Go around printing things for people.
that's bad advice unless you mean selling parts you designed yourself
but offering a print service is a terrible option
because your target audience of knowledgeable hobbyists who provide you with a printable file and know what to expect
are just buying their own printers or visiting a makerspace nowadays
instead you will get a bunch of facebook normies sending you pictures of what they like or rough written ideas
expecting you to do all the design work and then angrily yelling at you for being a rip off when you quote them the time it'd take
