How do you stay motivated to actually do /diy/ shit? I've tried pecking away at this order I have and in the 4 months I've had I've managed fuckall. I'm just so fucking depressed and lethargic all the time I can't work up the effort to be creative.

Set a regular sleep schedule that meets your needs. Exercise regularly, and eat well. Identify time and motivation sinks that short circuit your dopamine reward mechanism, and cut them out. E.g. social media (especially hunting for likes or upvotes), porn/masturbation, junk food, etc. Do you spend your time on 4chan learning new information and engaging in fun banter, or waste it on frivolities that will be forgotten tomorrow? Identify a goal and the various steps you will need to get there. The smaller and more concrete, the better. Do at least one step per day, no exceptions, and when you do it, give yourself a mental pat on the back. Identify a bad state that may result if you don't get your act together and the various shortcomings that would result in it. As before, be small and concrete. Whenever you catch yourself doing one, give yourself a mental slap in the face. To a very large extent, people are their habits. Establish the habits of the person you want to be.

Do you drink? If so, give up completely for a couple of months. Then come back and tell us how you feel.

Everyone is different. Some people can drink and be productive. I gave up drink and get so much more done.

It helps me a lot to have a deadline and something to look forward to when a project is done. For example a Halloween costume needs to be completed by the end of October and you can be excited about showing it off.

i did a complete 180 of a shed in my yard and it took 6 months of work and is still not completely finished, but as far as motivation goes, i just told myslef "this needs to be done" every time i was supposed to do work. it doesnt always work and i had times where i went out,did 30 minutes of work and went back in because i was tired of all the shit, but most of the time i thought "well, if i dont do it now, ill have to do it later, and noone else is willing to do it"
so just get out there and do it.

I don't.
Most of the time I get a good /diy/ idea is when I'm black-out drunk.
You don't stay motivated. You build a routine and you force yourself to stick to it until it becomes just that: a routine. It's automated. Now I wake up at 5 am to go to the gym, I don't even think about it. It's automatic. Because I spent ten fucking years forcing myself to do it.
It's the same for /diy/ projects I have. People do plans, people think ahead. I don't. I just do it. If I have an idea I just go with the flow and see where it leads. People who plan things out too much disgust me. You need a minimum amount of planning but too much just shows you're paranoid as fuck.
We're humans, anon. We're imperfect. It's not even our bodies which are imperfect. Even if I was a cyborg straight out of Gunnm i'd still get drunk once a week. You don't get motivation, you don't stay motivated: you build yourself into a machine which is capable of doing things well, including creating interesting stuff.
It only makes so much sense but you have to understand that we're not designed to be motivated and to see in the long run. We're designed to survive on a day-to-day basis like a salty Rust player. Therefore if you're trying to find how to "stay motivated" or "find motivation" you know you're going to fail because you're searching for an answer to a question which doesn't exist. You don't do these things, you BUILD motivation.
Creativity doesn't require effort imo, rather pain. Pain is how you get creative. You don't get creative because you WANT to. You get creative because you NEED to, when your life depends on it, or if you're black-out drunk, or when you are most in distress, most understanding of your own feelings.
We're not machines, anon. We're so imperfect it stinks. What you have to understand is simply the following:

You're not perfect and never will be, so stop whipping yourself for being a lazy piece of shit.

I hack up the things I need for function.
I have to get my ass up and fix my shit otherwise I have no heat, no car, cant get my email, etc.
Sometimes its exhausting trying to always build my own shit especially when its all broken, but when it works I know it's because I tried hard enough.

Also choose short projects that you can take from idea through prototype before you run out of steam. Just get something working, take your hands off it, use it for a while and then later on you can improve it as another small project.

You have an executive function disorder of some kind. Solving this problem should be your #1 fucking priority, or it WILL WRECK YOUR LIFE.

Do EVERYTHING you can think of to fix this. Start NOW.

Some suggestions:
>therapy (multiple kinds, multiple people)
>meditation (there are 10-day retreats in most countries that are 100% free)
>consistent sleep schedule, better sleep hygiene
>improve diet
>move in with your friends or family, instead of living alone(whoever you care about more, whoever you have a healthier relationship with)
>mutual accountability schemes (say you have a friend who's trying to lose weight, and another who's trying to finish a novel. every week you all get together on discord or whatever and talk about how you're doing on those goals, evaluate what's working/not working, talk about what you might do differently, adjust goals for the future)
>learn better practices for organization & time management (suggestion: Getting Things Done)

You need to make some massive changes to your life, or it's going to get worse and worse. If you give me more information about your life then I can suggest more shit.

some of it is bullshit advice
and you can't just assume that people have friends, especially not that those friends would be supportive. that's a cause and an effect.

it is impossible. when you first start a hobby, every step is exciting since you are discovering how to do something new. but eventually you will just 'know' how to do it so the excitement wears off and it becomes drudgery unless you have some other motivation such as saving money. to me, the only motivation is learning something new. which is why i move on from hobby to hobby and then give up.

Glad to know i am not the only one like that. We seem to be that kind of people who don't care about the final result and only care about the learning process, how to do something you know nothing about.
Which is why I also love modeling in LTSpice. Too lazy to build anything since I need to remember where my parts are and the initial hurdle of setting things up is such an effort I just give up and draw schematics in Spice. If at all. I've recently resumed learning some random math and it is almost a perfect hobby: it is a continuous learning process, you ALWAYS learn something new, there are no milestones, no tests to take so no stress and you can skip difficult parts to feel better about yourself and only concentrate on stuff you like to maximize dopamine release lol. And the best part, you can sit on your ass all day long and everything you need is in your laptop. A huge downside is when you are stuck you can get frustrated and even somewhat depressed but when it finally clicks and you feel like a fucking genius, you can't explain it to anyone around you. And talking math online can be tricky. Autistic posters misunderstand each other and sperg out all the time.

my most recent motivation, and i find it working out so far, is spite.ill show them, ill build the shit outta this. ill show them who the dickhead is.
>>1685602
I personally call it "the last 25%", i work my project until its functional, and then usually stop because im either just using it as is, or stop because the last 25% of the project is all the awful stuff/bullshit. things like properly routing all the cables nicely, makign everything fit into the encloser, setting everything up so that its not a dickaround every time you use it. the last 25% is grueling, everything youve been putting off doing because its not the fun parts. its usually the different between something presentable and hackey garbage.

sometimes though, its because my projects become obsolete by the time i get 50% and already bought the parts, i learn even more about the topic, realise my project will suck, and if i finish it, ill just be pissed off , so i start working on version2 and repeat the cycle
