I have a power supply to a device with the following ratings:

> 12v 3a 36w

It then plugs into a standard outlet, but I'm looking for a means by which to power it from my computer simply for the sake of doing so.

Right now, the best idea that I can find is a Powered USB card for my desktop. the teal plugs are rated at the following:

> 12v 4-6a 50-70w (this info varies a bit from brand to brand, apparently, but all of them are workable).

The only problem is that these cards are like $70 on the cheap end...

Any other ideas for more readily available ports that could supply the power that I need?

Firewire should do it; or just run a wire from your PC's power supply out of the case.

I know the voltage and wattage on Firewire can be good enough (I read 12v and up to 60w), but I saw an article that mentioned the amperage at 1.5.

Is that wrong?

a standard molex connection will be your best bet. It has a 5 and 12v line, and offers up to 11amps on each.

12v * 3a = 36w

If you want to get fancy, you can modify a PCI faceplate to hold the connection like any standard plug out the back, and get a female plug off a molex-powered fan or something.
