Is there any structural difference between galvanized and black pipe? Is it the same steel pipe with different coatings?

Are there any other kinds of steel pipe besides galvanized and black?

both are steel
you are correct that it is a coating
there are many types of steel tubing... depends on what your use for it is

As for colors, I've not seen very many colors for steel pipe. You could paint it or even electroplate it yourself with copper, chrome, etc.

The difference is in the coating. Galvanized steel has been coated in zink to prevent oxidation (rusting) of the underlying metal. Black steel pipes lack this coating, the black colour is the colour of the oxide. These are not types of steel, but types of finishes. The quality of the steel used depends on the application of the piping. As >>167778 said there are tons of different grades of steel.

Galvanized pipe has better rust resistance than black pipe but black pipe is less prone to scaling. You often find black pipe used for gas lines in homes where scale from galvanized coating could collect in a gas valve preventing it from closing.

They also sell stainless steel pipe in galvanized pipe standard sizes. It's more expensive though, and you'll have to buy it online or from a specialty company. Shit will last until the heat death of the universe, though.
