Apparently CMU homes (Croatian brick guy BTFO) are extremely common in Florida, due to the threat of hurricanes.
Too bad these aren't available elsewhere.

Northern California here. For some reason, a bunch of low-income homes in my area were built like that. There are 4 different small housing tracks and a handful of one-offs in town. Maybe 30 total. All built in the '60s. We aren't in earthquake country so they don't need much reinforcing but it still seemed like a waste of money. We have a huge timber industry out here so wood is dirt cheap and carpenters cost a lot less than masons.

Old houses everywhere.

>own several older rental houses in Southeast and have lived in such houses throughout my life

You will see a lot of houses from 1920's to 1970's built out of block. It's not as common nowadays but a fourth of my rentals are block houses. Pretty fucking sturdy, even if they're shitboxes

A lot of low-income houses are concrete block. I live in now defunct coal country and most of the company houses are.

One of the reasons people use wood, aside from cheapness, is it easily allows for remodeling. Knocking down 2-bys is a lot easier than moving block.

I've been to Florida (Miami) and seen the "quality" homes are built with with down there using CBs... I'd never want to live in one.
Now try and do a CB house here in the upper midwest where we can get -30 F weather... good luck not freezing to death or have a $2K monthly heating bill.

>> No.1681499

these CB houses are real common up in the panhandle....see them all the time. even the ones on the beach take the hurricanes pretty well..the ones inland last a long time. though most of the ones built in the 50's and 60's have to rely on window units for AC...you always used to see te old school ones with the jalousie windows and decorative block car ports.

Who is this "Croatian brick guy"? In any case, i'm sure you can get any kind of house build anywhere in US. Its just that most Americans expect to pay 7$ for anything done for them unless its a hotrod so they chose to live in pathetic sheet rock sheds. If no one is asking

t. another Croatian who lives in a brick house.

I grew up in miami, and my stepdad was a marine contractor (he built docks basically)
there were certainly stick houses being built at the time, though the first floor was partly concrete. Most houses and even most dock pilings are made from concrete though, people dont want that shit to blow over in a hurricane. Pic related is a house built to withstand the powerful hurricanes and the storm surge that comes with them, these are common in the florida keys and bahamas

this image really shows that this design works well, all the houses standing are stilt houses except the two which are cheap places made of concrete

SoCal resident here. That house wouldn't survive a mag 6 let alone the 7s we have every 20 years or so. (Assuming proximity to the event sufficient enough to be meaningful.) LA only had the equivalent of a long mag 3 when those desert quakes hit in July for example.

They are actually awning windows. Jalousie windows are similar but are much smaller and even more prone to breaking. I've only seen jalousie windows on doors here in Florida. I have lived here over 15 years. Those houses most likely have plaster board walls and terrazzo floors. Here's my recently refinished terrazzo floors. It's hard to show the shine but they're smooth as glass.

They don't, and it'd be trash tier to have one in the front of the house, and asking to be stolen and robbed if it's on the ground floor.

these things are heat batteries. I've actually measured it with a infrared thermometer and the roof (from the inside of the house, mind you) sometimes stay in the 90-100f till 1-3 AM. depends on the day of course. they usually have no insulation, no gable roofs, no tall roofs with ventilation, etc.. so you're pretty much on an upside down heating pan. shit is disgusting. I get that these things are more expensive to build so you have to cut the costs somehow, but holy fuck there's no excuse to not at least insulate these saunas.
