1.) You take a shovel. When I say that you take a shovel, you don't actually take somebody's shovel, you either use your own, buy one from wallmart for like 1$ or borrow one.
Shovels look like pic related. They're often made from metal and wood, but may also have plastic, so remember to recycle it. The metal is most likely steel, so you might break your limp wrists when you pick it up, so be careful. You may have seen them in movies or on the way to your local starbucks when there's a construction site. They can be found from the tool isle, since they're commonly used tools. They're used to dig holes but can also be used to move sand, dirt, gravel, etc.
REMEMBER! In order to use the shovel, you may need to use physical strenght! If you lack physical strenght, you may need to consider your life choises or ask your wife's/mom's boyfriend to dig the hole for you.
A good way to test if you're able to use the shovel is to lift it up. If you managed to do that without getting a heart attack or feeling oppressed, you may be able to wield it.

2.)
The next stage is to prepare to dig, for that you need energy. Around 500 extra calories is enought for a small hole. If it's a warm weather, you may also need to drink water. You also need to prepare your mind that your clothes will get literally dirty. Get some clothes that ran out of fashion a few months ago, since you're going to dispose them anyway whether they were clean or not.
At this point you need to consider all the environmental factors. Where are you going to dump all the dirt that you dig out? The dirt also contains worms and other creatures. You're ruining the environment with your excavation and destroying the worm's home. The vietcong hole isn't actually very fun anyway because your clothes and shoes will always get dirty in it. It also has spiders and whatnot.
You can still be a communist without the vietcong hole. All you need to do is to punch nazies in the face and wave the pride flag.

They actually mentioned this on Basic Training back in the day, and said EZ-Mode was as follows:

Material:
Shovel
At least 1 good pallet (with no spaces in the top, or get two and make it so)

Steps:
1. Mark out a square as big as your pallet.
ii. Use the shovel to cut the topsoil turf the same size as your pallet. Peel this off the round and set aside.
c) Dig the first few inches, equal to the thickness of your pallet to the same dimensions as your pallet. The remainder of the hole should be a couple of inches smaller on all sides than your pallet, to the required depth.
Four. Put that topsoil on top of your pallet
Final Step: Because you dug your your hole to start the same size as your hole, your topsoil camo pallet should function as a lid.
