I have heard you can start blasting out the bedrock in most places at about 500ft depth, give or take.

Dig a hole, design a foundation and wall system that can support the earth sideloading pressure, design a drainage system to get rid of water, then spend a ton of money.
easy peasy

You'll likely need to keep the water out so invest in pumps and sealant.

Or 5 feet. Save some money and get some core drilling done. Buy the land. Get to boring. Plus solid rock so no need to even reinforce of you dont use boomstickz.

Good luck TROLLPEE

I know the whole "don't make a container bunker" meme is a thing here, but I legit would like to know if its feasible to use a container if you lay beams over the top pour concrete around it.

sure
but why bother with the container at that point?

>>1653667
probably the opposite
you are going to spend a lot of time, money, and effort to make something do what it was never intended to do. you could just go out and buy something already designed to go underground. or risk your engineering skills and build one like you would build the foundation of a house

How much does a box culvert cost anyway? A 20' container costs 1200-1500 in my area, plus another 500-600 for the concrete. Would a precast culvert structure roughly the same size actually be cheaper than that?

Containers are a meme for a reason. If you want a strong structure to serve as the backbone of your underground shelter, choose the culvert option. Just make sure to compact the backfill during installation.

Shipping containers make bunkers a solved problem. Their use to hide aliens evacuated from Area 51 is an example.

Ever since a child having an underground bunker/hidden shelter to hang out in was like the coolest shit ever. However I can never act on this dream or even talk to people about it because everyone would (rightfully) ask the question "What the fuck do you need a hidden bunker for?" and (unjustly) assume I'm some pedo or psycho or something.

The truth is, I don't know why it's so cool to me. I just like the idea of building a "homebase", I always built camps as a kid. I like building my own little place to live in. It's just so cool to me, I can't explain it.

While I also have this adolescent fantasy about a bunker, especially enhanced by season 2 of L O S T and the Fallout games, the adult in me recognizes the utter pointlessness of it.

The simplest of bunkers is just a house in an area away from the disasters you most fear. Hidden places in the house with food and water along with non-hidden places of food and water.

A bunker just isn't a good way to survive and even if you had one you have to think about it in terms of time. How long can I live in this bunker before leaving? The same question in a house. So what is the benefit of a bunker vs a house? I can think of only one: the bunker is less vulnerable overall than the house. And even this point has pros and cons. A bunker for example is much more vulnerable to flooding for example.

inb4 use lots of rebar and pour an inch every month.
