Pic somewhat related.
I'm trying to build a chest with a lid. The top will have to swing up (see pic). But the top will be about 3 inches high. And the chest will be pushed up against a wall with very little clearance (maybe 1/4"). So the lid will have to move forward as it is lifted in order to clear the wall. This means that the hinges (mounted inside the cabinet) will need a relatively complex geometry.

I don't know what such a hinge would be called in order to Google for the hardware. Any ideas or leads?

why? why can't there be space?

wtf, why?

Because those are the customer's design requirements. And the customer is always right.

the customer sounds like a huge faggot but you could simply do this

don't all kitchen cabinet hinges do this?
swing up cabinet hinges certainly do.
also i don't know how you would mount it but upvc window hinges work on that kind of idea, the hinge side of the window pushes into the frame as it closes to seal, and pulls out as it opens to clear.

Some Blum hinges do. But they only push out enough to clear a half inch door or face frame. So I'm looking for a generic name for this sort of hinge that can be spec'd for a larger clearance (thicker lid).
>upvc window hinges work on that kind of idea
Yeah. But one edge of the window pushes into the room as the other edge swings out.

I didn't state this before (and I deserve the shit I'll be getting) but I'm retrofitting an existing piece of furniture. It has a piano hinge on the back, but gouges the wall if placed closer than 3 inches. The top is slightly wider than the cabinet sides, so swinging in into the interior won't work. And cutting the lid and putting a piano hinge 3 inches in from the back is not acceptable either.

How about an offset door hinge?

look at various "concealed cabinet hinge"s and you might find what you need or get some inspiration to look for what you do need.

There are many styles that rotate on different offsets axis or geometry, and in steps. examples: rotate on axis, extend then pivot, pivot on offset point axis, etc

True, but customers are also usually ignorant, and it's your job to educate them. If there's baseboard you have at least 1/2", and with shoe you'll have a full inch probably. You could easily ask the customer to confirm this, and it won't even sound like you're going against their wishes.

OP said "3 inches high". No damn hinge can do that except maybe some industrial monster.

Or maybe concealed door hinges meant for full sized doors
Or some more alternate geometry pivot mechanism like pic related

This is like a Blum cabinet door hinge. The concept would work but cabinet doors are typically .75" to 1.0" thick max.

Now we are getting somewhere!

Looks like "swing up flap hinge" or lift up flap hinge are 2 names for those things

ever encounter one of those couches with a bed that you can fold out from under the cushions. pretty well exactly the same thing here except instead of a couch its a box and instead of a bed its a lid
