Anyone know how to use tote boxes for home storage? I've been given 200 of them with no instructions

Would like to know the answer to this too.
People keep telling me to use shit like this but it seems really inconvenient to either have to dig through boxes to find what I need or have lots of dead space with containers that aren't fairly full.

There is no perfect answer to storage and organization unless you freeze your situation and neither acquire nor discard anything. Just try to avoid piling things up or cramming lots of unrelated things into large containers.

Try to organize things in the simplest effective manner, which might involve labeling containers, taping a list on the wall, having a loose-leaf notebook, notes in a computer file or spreadsheet, or something on your phone. And different things will be best suited to different approaches.

But just accept that it's impossible to do this perfectly. And one can never have too much shelf space.

You just put your stuff inside and close the lids

This, and label them, so you know what’s inside.
And, get the dollies made for them, and stack a few to save floor space.
I use one for fasteners ( screws, bolts, power-driven nails) because they filled one up.
Another for drills, another for power saws, another for the less needed stuff- planers, metal shears & belt sander. A stack of three next to the bench, two singles rolled underneath.

Are totes not "large containers" to most people?
>spreadsheets
I have a sub-200sqft shop area.

That sounds like a massive pain in the ass and barely an upgrade from just stuffing things in a cardboard box. It sort of makes sense if you have a lot of rarely-used things and the time to dig them out when needed. Most of my stuff isn't like that, it's things I access either nearly-constantly or which would be a massive headache to have buried when that "just in case" comes up.

I like drawers and cabinets, from my perspective it seems a lot of people in recent years are allergic to them and fetishize tool walls and totes or bins or whatever nowadays.

Then you don’t need anything for storage.
Give the crates away to somebody who needs storage.
If you need constant access, keep your stuff in sight, and within reach.

I'm not OP. I've just been looking for organization ideas for a while and it's all "DECLUTTER DECLUTTER KONMARI PUT YOUR SHIT IN TOTES" and minimal actual useful information. I only found one guy explaining to put 18" deep cabinets and shelves everywhere, emphasis on the idea of organizing with "hallways." And that a workbench should be accessible from multiple positions so you can pivot without having to move, not taking up valuable wall space that a drawer (aka single-sided) cabinet would be better used for.

You put stuff in the box. It's not that hard.

here is how i tidy up op:
throw everything in a cupboard.
if you need it, pull it out and don't put it away
at the end of the year, anything in the cupboard throw it in the trash.
repeat until there is enough space in the cupboard for everything neatly to have its own place.
