But since you asked.

Arm and Hammer washing soda
Twenty Mule Team borax
A bar of fels naptha soap

Shave the fels naptha soap and melt it down with water on the stove

Mix all the shit together in a five gallon bucket. The ingredients separate so you have to mix it with a drill often. I don't miss being poor. Good luck.

A lot of detergents are garbage these days and leave a lot of residue in the clothes you wash. To check, just give it a wash in cold water and then spin it, and watch the filthy water coming out.

After the main washing cycle I add a tablespoon of household (dilute) ammonia to the water for rinsing, and a lot more comes out. There is significant less buildup on the inside surfaces of the washing machine too.

How about

WO2019123343) LAUNDRY DETERGENT COMPOSITION:
1. An article comprising:

a shear-thinning, non-thixotropic aqueous liquid detergent comprising:

at least about 25% by weight of water based on the total weight of the aqueous liquid detergent;

a builder comprising potassium carbonate; and

a chloride salt;

wherein the builder and the chloride salt are present in a combined total amount of about 25% to about 50% percent by weight based on the total weight of the aqueous liquid detergent, and the builder and the chloride salt are present in a weight ratio of about 99: 1 to about 75:25; and

a package for the aqueous liquid detergent which is in direct contact with the aqueous liquid detergent, wherein the package is formed from a water-soluble, film-forming material.

Not DIY but generic woolite from the dollar store works surprisingly well. It's also lot cheaper than making your own soap.

Do not buy any other kind of dollar-store detergent. I know the bottle's bigger, but it will make your clothes smell like a drunk tank.

It does make good toilet-cleaner though.

sorry, I'm back. Got a full court boot for some shit.

Using ammonia after is also a great idea.
I use an ammonia dip on my polishing pads after detailing cars. The wax, sealant and polish literally dissolves right off.
