Hey /diy/

I'm curious on how to make this small bear claw into a necklace.

I got some leather cord that I want to use with it. I will post pics of another necklace I made with it. This one was easier though since it already had a bail (or bale, however you spell it).

I would rather not dig a hole through the claw, I am not sure how fragile they are inside. I'd rather encase the top somehow, if that is even possible.

Any tips or suggestions? I don't browse this board often at all so I am sorry if there is a dedicated necklace thread or something. I already looked in google on different ways, but almost all of them showed a metal encasing which I would rather not do. I'm trying to keep it as natural as possible.

Thanks for your help guys.

Just drill a hole, it will be fine.

Yeah I kept browsing the internet after I posted this and it seems like it's what everyone is suggesting.

I'll keep the thread up for ideas, but I guess I might be stuck with that option. Not like it looks bad, anyways.

You could polyurethane the inside of the hole if deterioration is a concern.

Thanks for that suggestion, I probably will end up doing that. Do you think I should coat the whole claw in it or just the inside?

I was thinking the whole claw.

Im no expert, but I would use a light coating of polycrylic on the outside.

Depending on your skill you may craft a wooden encasing by using rather wet wood and let it dry in place.

That's something similar to what I was thinking of. Wood or some sort of bone mold that I can put a bail on. I am not skilled with this though, so I think I will drill a little hole on the top.

If the thread is up by friday I'll post pics of final result.

Well I managed to do it. Not the result I expected, but it wasn't terrible.

Drilled a hole through the top part, figured out it was real bone. I put a coat of polyurethane in the hole, let it dry and put a small bit of leather coil through it. It was different than the one I posted. I made the necklace a bit long so I could wear it with an obsidian arrowhead necklace I got from Mexico. Could've turned out better, but definitely what I was going for (in a way).

Thanks for your suggestions.

Hey OP, that looks neat. Was gonna suggest you drill slowly in case it's really brittle but no point now. BTW, where did you get the claw?

I got it from some tiny house-shop in Virginia when I was travelling from Ontario to North Carolina.

They had all sorts of animal bones, pre-made necklaces, pendants, small leather bags, pelts, all sorts of hunter knick knacks. Owner told me this was a young bear his kid shot. I wish I could remember the name of the place but it was so small I don't even think it's an actual business or anything. Regardless it was a cool find.

Thanks everyone.
