I myself cannot into electronics. But I have no problems with the large amount of electronics threads on this board. I don't think trying to claim one faction that frequents this board is more /diy/-worthy than another is really worthwhile or in the spirit of diy. Really, no one should care what someone else is doing unless they're acting in a way that prevents you from discussing your interests.

That being said there are absolutely better forums with tradesmen that have many more years of experience than the majority of posters on this board. This is not the place to learn how to become a master woodcrafter or really a master of any trade. What this board is good at is coming up with interesting solutions to unique problems. Don't get me wrong; I don't think /diy/ is an elite brain trust--most of the questions here involve typical homeowner problems that could be solved with a trip to Home Depot, and 90% of the ideas suggested to fix unique problems are crap. But there are good ideas here sometimes, and you would be hard pressed to find them elsewhere. Those other forums I mentioned are awesome for learning how to work like the pros, but when you pose a unique problem all anyone will be able to tell you is how best to apply standard practice.

>> No.162593

>>162591

For those that are tradesmen, /diy/ is a great place to go to feel superior, if you're into that sort of thing. But I would caution you to remember that there is always someone better at what you do than you are, and that everyone has to start somewhere. Calling a novice kid and telling them to GTFO does nothing to help them improve and nothing to help the trade they are taking their first baby steps in. If the person you're trying to help is acting belligerent that's different but otherwise there's no reason for open hostility without provocation; that sort of crap just shits up the board.

Don't get me wrong--tradesmen are the backbone and safety net of this board. Without knowledgeable people things would go to shit very quickly; I can think of quite a few threads where a tradesman swooping in saved the someone from burning down their house or other catastrophe. But just telling people that you know more than them and offering nothing further does nothing productive, and I would encourage you to ask yourself why you're here.

I probably would build more wood projects. But I move to often, and HATE bringing heavy shit with me. That and the price of wood has gone up 500% in the last 13 years or so.

Electronics on the other hand are smaller, and thus more portable, The relative price of even newer technology has dropped a lot in the last 10 years. And a lot of obsolete tech is cheap as free.

I'm going to keep working with electronics. But if I ever buy a house I'll build some awesome woodworking stuff. As a kid I designed a combination entertainment center/bookshelf/desk that fit into the corner of my room quite nicely.

Possibly janitors, but agreed, not Mods. The only way it would work out otherwise would be if the tripfag could separate their tripfag personality from their status as a Mod, and not mix the two. A tripfag being a mod and making it known that they are a mod would probably cause thread derailments almost every time they posted. And having a tripfag that is also a mod would be dangerously close to forum ranking systems they have elsewhere; as-is tripfags are just regular posters with names, and I don't think there would be any good reason to change that.

I think I tried stuffing too much into the hole. I ended up skimming off a lot of the finer materials that give the smooth finish, leaving visible aggregate at the surface that wouldn't sink. The end result was lumpy but level enough to bolt the stairs to and forget about it. I want to try again, but it's not every day that I need to pour a concrete pad.

How much weight does it need to hold? Honestly, there's no reason not to use screws...glue can fall apart eventually, but screwing things really helps them stay together. If it is lightweight, particleboard or MDF will work just fine. With plywood, you can end up with a weird texture...or a lot of splinters unless you get the sanded variety, and even then....

But if this is supporting a lot of weight, go with something a little thicker, pieces of actual lumber like pine or oak.

Draw a plan and come up with precise measurements and you can have your local lumber store make the cuts in the wood for you, so all you have to do is assemble.

Prolly a bit too late for you >>163105, but have you considered a design like this >>163138?

Cant remember the name of them or i'd have googled an image up, but I threw together some of these at a school working day to make some pigeon holes, you could scale it down to your own needs using thin ply, perhaps designing the rectangles to be close to the same size as plastic drawers or something you can buy somewhere.

Easy as hell to cut, just stack your rows/colums and cut them as one with a jigsaw or wood saw. Straight cuts are of course crucial here.

Basically, take as many slats as you need shelves, cut equal lines 1/2 way through, then slot front blue pieces into the red columns to make self supporting shelves. We mounted to a brick wall, as you arent you'll prolly only to glue these (once you were certain it was square) and lock it off by screwing/gluing rectangular stock of your choice (Green blocks) into the outside corner sections for rigidity. Something strapped diagonally across the back would help here too..

They certainly aren't the best benches, if you look carefully you'll see that I cut the front right leg of one of them waaaay too short and had to bolt another bit of timber on. Shit, the slats for the sub bench shelves aren't even screwed down, they just lay across the bottoms of the leg stringers. But they suited every design point I wanted them for. shelving to suit my component boxes and other misc, large space underneath for larger tools, and beefy surface and frame for metalworking.
