What's the best? I've just started mining and they gave me a shitty plastic one

Plastic is the best protection/weight ratio imho. Anything that would destroy plastic helmet would likely cause serious neck injury with harder metallic helmet.

I had one when I was working in Croatia. It was a Petzl, but an earlier model than this one. I loved it. It was loaned to me by the GC, and he wanted it back. Fucker.

I had a no-name clone of one in Cyprus (Malta?). I kept looking for the Fisher-Price label on it. Terrible suspension.

Look for a lid that has attachment points for chin strap, earmuffs and not a weird shape that makes your head lamp slide off every 5 minutes. Also look to see what your site uses for sweat band replacements some of the harnesses in the helmet use a different attachment method than normal.

seriously the plastic ones can take some abuse.
I have seen a guy who threw his hardhat down so often that he replaced it like every 6 months... but it seemed like he was throwing it down every couple of days at times.

The cutout is so you can wear electronic earmuffs.
Foam plugs works fine, but they are annoying to put in and out and it is too hard to hear what your coworkers are saying.

I have to wear one of these all day(the facial protection can slide fully inward) cause I work as an electrician (steel mill).

They are quite big compared to normal operator helmets but luckily quite light weight.

Why we all need to wear helmets is beyond me.

We need the face-protection for switching on/off fuses and stuff but nobody uses it.
