i thought this was a piece of wood, but im beginning to doubt it.

I got this in a bag with some burl, but after cutting into it it kind of has a plastic sheen to it and the shavings were oddly powdery plus it kinda smells like weed

Did you just actually drill into a tuber?

>> No.1619999

Plastic melts
Heat a small nail
Stick it
If it’s plastic it will melt
If it’s wood it will burn

Get a microscope, some dye, and a tiny fragment of this - you’ll see cell walks if it’s plant based

>> No.1620206

Wood and potatoes are both plant cells with cell walls

It doesn’t look that old. I think it’s Native American fingerbox. Worth about $15 OP.

Right.
Then, If you want to see which of those, drip iodine on it. Starch from potatoes will turn it purple.

Have a bag of them somewhere for doing inlay work.
They're used as a vegetable sourced ivory replacement.

My bad I never thought I finished posting this or I would've been active but, I think you're right they seem to be the right size roughly 2-3" and look very similar, and the density was similar to denser hardwoods so it seems in line with a nut. I definitely appreciate the answer! I'm less worried about having breathed in some of the dust from it
