So I don’t have a car and I’m looking into building my custom bike should I go electric or gas and also what do I need to do for the process

Just pedal the fucking thing, grafting a motor onto a bike is a great project for a 12 year old with an interest in mechanics, beyond that it is just lame. Get a small scooter/mini bike/or the sort, cheap and plentiful, better in everyway and can be had near free if you do not mind a project.

You'll want a more open-frame (assuming that's the bike design/bike choice).

You can easily sandwich a 49CC motor in there with a gas tank. My state allows up to that w/o having to register it or do other bullshit so that's what my brother did.

49CC Engine kit off ebay was like 120 delivered, has to custom make a fuel line but it was fairly straight-forward. gets about 50mpg.

depends on your location, infrastructure and use case. also do you plan to leave it unattended outside of stores? if you need more range than 20km i'd go with gas because batteries cost a fortune.

i'd love to get an electric mountain bike though. being out in nature with a 90 decibel monster isn't too peaceful. also, creeping up on people who have never seen an electric locomotive aside from a nissan leaf is pretty fun.

If you are planning to ride this on the street check your local laws. Some brands of electric bikes have pedal assisted power delivery and are considered bikes, while throttle controlled electric bikes are considered motorized vehicles and have to be licensed and operated as such. Just depends on your local laws. Better to check that out before spending a lot of money on something that isn't street legal.

You can get high-torque, low(relatively)-RPM DC electric motors for around $35 a piece. Make sure to gear them to run at/near max efficiency at a normal cruising speed.

i assume that stealing a gas powered bike would be harder than an electric one. really depends on how you rig it up. if you go electric, i'd recommend wiring up an anti-tamper alarm like those rent-a-scooter companies have

If its gas its gonna be loud and cheap feeling probably won't be able to take it most places an ebike will do just fine in just because of sound, if its electric itll be all smooth and quiet. No "what is that weedwacker sounding thing" looks from pedestrians. Just get some cheapo ebike kit off amazon, make sure you have a donor bike though

Anyone else think electric bikes are cancer? Just encouraging laziness, and an adult on one of them looks poor, at least the ones on pedal bikes are excused because they're keeping fit.

Im in the process of building an electric bike and Ive gone pretty hard. I made the spot welder, using the spot welder I made the batteries, made the motor out of a car alternator. Only things I didnt make were the throttle and or speed controller. Ive 3d printed brackets to put the stuff on the bike and Im waiting on a friend of mine with helping me machine the drive shaft to gear down the alternator. My bike is bb drive, going alternator - > shaft - > freewheeling crank

My advice would be to go electric because itll be more powerful in all likelihood, though it will be more expensive. It can be as easy as buying a hub motor and replacing one of the wheels and just buying the battery and speed controller or you can go full sperg and make the whole thing like me.

Im an engineering student and going about it the way I did has taught me alot and gives me great stuff to talk about in networking events and interviews. If youre gunna do it, go hard and have a cool bike at the end

Hi Opie, cool project.
Easiest is to start by sourcing components already made for the task. Unless you have some experience fabricating metal and wiring electronics I'd recommend going for stuff you can buy, rather than mangle washing machines and motorcycle batteries.
In short you need the following:
>Bike frame that fits your setup
>>Ditto wheels, chain, wires etc.
>Motor
>>Either crank driven (more power)
>>Or hub driven (cheaper)
>Battery and mount + wiring
>>Look up forums and videos of people sperging out and select a good middle candidate for your budget
>The tools and plans to do it
A lot of kits are made to be legal for sale in Europe. That means they have controllers and ratings built to spec for pedal-assist, but limited to 250W effect.
Unless you're looking to make an electric motorbike and go 50+kph without pedaling, you're good to start there. Higher effect and longer range are the real determinant for price. Don't listen to the haters saying it's lazy, it certainly is less lazy than buying a car or taking the bus.

>>1609867

I have good advice. Leave chain so pedaling is possible. Get a 1000 watt rear hub motor and make some zaney little 250 watts of power stucker to show the cops its just a little 250 watt assist motor. Just fake pedal when you see a cop or make uo a story about it having a temporary boost mode so you can take a break from pedalling.

Cops arent going to whip out a multimeter. If one is a prick just say sorry youll walk it home. About 2 nlocks in blast off
