/dyi/o's. You are looking at the nether reagions of my fathers yamaha sbg500. I love this guitar but plugging it in and use of the knobs generates static often cutting out sound to the amp so i want to replace the knobs and wiring, possibly pickups with a little more research and experimentation.

Can you guys reccommend reliable hardware? Ill be trying to draw up a schematic from the existing connections but a proffessional one would be helpful too. Tips tricks hints always welcome.

Potentiometers get noisy as they age. Nothing you can do about it except replace them. Buy higher quality potentiometers, they'll last longer.

You can try cleaning the pots, too.

is there a difference between volume and tone potentiometers? tone have a small piece of circuitry hardware but i havent the slightest. also 250k or 500k?

>> No.161016

if there's a beginners guide to rewiring it would be extremely helpful.

Offhand I'd say different tapers. The ear response is logarithmic, so I'd expect volume pots to have a logarithmic taper (as opposed to linear).

You should match the size and wattage rating as closely as possible.

just spray it with contact cleaner. i use it all the time for volume control pots.

Only difference is that you wire a capacitor to the tone pot.
250k if you're using single coils, 500k for humbuckers is the rule of thumb.

Search on google if you can find some schematics, then it's just a matter of unsoldering, replacing old parts and resoldering everything.

thank you anon. its running humbuckers atm.

do humbuckers "go bad" as my pots have

Not OP but how do you find that on pots long term?

>> No.161146

>>161063
They're just wire and magnets and plastic... For them to go bad you'd have to wait a long time.

sprayed once. no problems after that. even when not used for awhile.

Pickups are much more durable than pots.

Don't worry too much, OP. Wiring up a guitar is buttfuck easy. Even I can do it.

Tone pots have a capacitor soldered on. You're basically controlling the volume for certain frequencies instead of the whole signal. You'll probbly want to get a .047uf capacitor for your guitar: that's around what most Gibson guitars use. Fenders tend to be .022

I'll leave this here: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/

They have a wide variey of wiring schematics, for different type of pickups/pots/switches configurations. You'll love it.

Spraying contact cleaner, even the type sold specifically for potentiometers, is only a stop-gap. They get noisy because the moving parts get worn, and the resistance element gets rough grooves worn into it from the contacts. The "cleaner" will remove carbon particles and temporarily lubricate the pot, but much sooner than you think it'll start getting noisy again. Potentiometers aren't all that expensive, you can buy higher quality ones than what the guitar came with, and it'll be years and years before you have to replace them again, if ever, and it's not very difficult to replace them even for a beginner.
