I was at an ace the other week. I wanted to exchange my new IR thermometer. I explained to the manager what was wrong with it, and how we could diagnose it and that I would like to exchange it or get a refund.He stared at me blankly and I asked if he knew what I was asking. He said "yes I understand but I don't know what you want me to do". I just fucking left. He followed me out to my truck muttering something like I'll exchange it or some such bullshit.

I was working on a Stenographic machine once, DIY style. Somewhere along the line I must have misplaced a screw, because I only got part of the conversation. Even though I hit all the keys. Don't you hate that? Missing or possibly lose screws. There weren't any on the ground so I know I it was just impossible that there was any more to this machine.

The worst fucking thing
The WORST FUCKING THING about diy stuff is having to unfuck what the previous diy guy did.
Whoever remodeled my house before I lived here evidently bought every goddamn thing he used from the local Agent Orange and now it's all falling off the walls, tile is shitting the bed.
Just took my first shower at home in a week because the upstairs shower started leaking and the main floor shower head just fucking fell off and broke into 80 pieces.

This. Walmart cucks are trained to just bother the fuck out of you if you look suspicious. Ive never stolen anything in my life. About a year ago i went into atwoods. Because of everyones plans i wound up meandering around atwoods for 2 hours. I didn't mind but apparently they did. Because after the initial "can i help you today" on the way in, the last hour they asked me if i needed help like 20 times. I started to get pissed but descided to have a little fun. I just started acting shady af and taking a lot of pics of things. After i walked i to the bathroom and out the 5th time they asked me to leave. Bought a fifth wheel I live in, about a month in I've replaced a wall socket three times. Just went again. (three months later).

Called to make sure if the thing catches fire its covered, get told my coverage doesn't cover any damage or even apply. I asked why I was sold coverage to begin with if they don't cover anything in my situation, was told if it doesn't have a motor they can't cover it. Period.

Every time I go to Lowes or HD, I'm in the store for at least 45 mins. Not because I'm browsing, reading, or looking at multiple things. It's because I can never find what I'm FUCKING looking for. I end up running all over the store, then try to find someone to help. Good luck finding someone, but if you do they never can help, even though their FUCKING apron says "I help in all departments".

Also, I can't confirm this, but I think they switch shit around every few months just to keep you in the store longer. I swear I knew where the picture hangers were, but when I went last week they weren't there, but in some fucking stupid, non-related aisle on the other side of the store.

Its not a home on a solid foundation, so it wouldn't be covered under a homeowners policy. You do have the ability to have it covered under a recreational vehicle policy if you live in the United States, and you can have coverage for contents and the actual cash value of the the camper. Progressive should probably be an option for you. I wonder if they sold you just liability coverage because it was attached to an auto policy. Recreational Vehicle policy is not very expensive.

former Home Depot Order Fulfillment Associate here, i highly recommend placing orders online ahead of time, especially for products with low inventory numbers. pick out lumber and plants yourself but when you know exactly what you need just buy it ahead of time instead of wandering the 50+ aisles.

i can't vouch for every store (some are run by idiots while others are understaffed and overwhelmed) but for the most part OFAs will have any order pulled for you within 2 hours and we know the store better than any individual associate from one department. if hasn't already been stolen we'll find it, even if it means digging through the pallets in the back that just came off a truck.

also fuck you if you place an order for lumber online and have the gaul to bitch that the boards arent straight enough. pick out your own 2x4's, you know they are shit because they are always shit, im not going to sort through a bunk of 690 boards just so your shoddy framing project is slightly less warped.

Ace Assistant Manager here.

At my store, we live in terror of the secret shopper saying that they weren't greeted or offered help.

If someone says they don't need help, we'll radio to the rest of the crew that they're good on their own, but sometimes people don't hear it.

On the flip side of that coin, though, I work in an area filled with wealthy middle aged folks. They have the latest smartphones, but can't use them to Youtube a video on how to use spackle or what kind of screws to use for what application. Better to err on the side of caution and ask if everyone needs help with something.

Put a temp patch on a sidewalk where our 10yard concrete delivery crushed a busy main area and dropped a gas service access cap in it as a joke.
8 months later when I came back to do the apron sidewall and curb I pointed out the (dead) gas line and the actual gas line
gc had to bring the city engineer out with old town prints and spent 4 hours trying to figure out what was happening between calls to the gas company and referring to layouts from 20 years ago.

Most of it was the original layer but one room had paneling on one wall to hide a hole some kid kicked in the drywall, and the doors had been replaced with some cheap foamboard crap. All that was easy to fix.

I do, however, have a gas shut-off on the wall above a window in the utility room. That will get fixed when I re-plumb the kitchen and bath.

Home Depot is Love anon here again. Sadly this was the case at my store. Partly because we were grossly understaffed but also partly because they would hire anyone, so ended up with fucks (a lot of them) who just didn't give a shit and would basically wander off. I was in Paint, and one of the worst departments for this was Plumbing which was the next aisle over, so I was constantly, _constantly_ dealing with upset customers from Plumbing coming over to me (because in Paint were were more or less always contained in the paint counter) while the assholes on shift in Plumbing would literally be outside wandering around the plants in Lawn & Garden. The fact our store had ZERO loss prevention staff also meant there was basically nobody ever watching cameras which made it that much easier.
There were also times when I'd be sent to go do an errand for management in another part of the store, say lumber, and because those jackasses did the same shit as Plumbing I'd suddenly find myself surrounded by understandably impatient customers who would then just get even more pissed off at me when I told them I had no idea about this or that, couldn't operate the saw, et cetera. As much as I hated it, I began learning how to do that crap just to be able to take care of people.
One thing I made sure NOT to do though was train on the lift/reach/forklift. I very quickly realized that there was such a shortage of people trained/cleared to work those, that anyone who was, was CONSTANTLY being pulled away to other departments to fetch/move shit, on top of their own duties in their own department.
Fucking clusterfuck store all around.

- Training a new tech, we're cleaning furnaces. The one he is on has the burners mounted upside down, if you take the screws out all the burners come tumbling out and it's a bitch to get back together. I tell him don't take them out. A few minutes later I hear the sound of burners collapsing out of their slots, he took them out. It took him over a half hour to reassemble because I refused to help him.

- Tech tells me he is cleaning a two stage furnace that someone locked in high fire years ago. He asks if he should unlock it so it stages again. I tell him no, it was done for a reason and leave it. He unlocks it anyway and sure enough the owner calls back and complains that it doesn't work right now. End up going back myself and re-locking it.

the main issue was dealing with any remaining fuel in the system, returned gas tools are shipped back to the vender but per DOT regulations you cant have more than a few ounces in the tank so they need to be drained before shipping. at my Home Depot we had a tool rental center that could siphon the fuel out into their waste tanks. if that isnt possible i wouldnt be surprised if a different store would outright refuse the return so they wouldnt have to deal with your shitty gas.

Never let any, ANY retail store or any kind hide behind bullshit policies to keep from taking back defective, garbage shit they sold you. Fucking HobbyTown USA had this policy on "opened" model kits back in the 90s when I bought some fucking Italeri kit of a German halftrack, and the box was sealed in shrinkwrap but when I got home and opened it I discovered someone had fucking built half the kit (badly) and put it back into the box. Loose parts sprues and glue gobs and all. My father took me back and I took it up to the counter and the fat fuck pedo-looking asshole working there picked up the plastic sign that had the no return policy on it and dropped it down on the counter in front of me like a smartass. At that point I was like "don't give me that, someone opened it and built it." They gave me my refund (and probably re-shrinked it and put it back out for sale).

New guy to this chain.
I actually am lucky enough to have a local hardware store close-ish to my house. I often go there if I can avoid HD or Lowes at all. We also don't have any Ace hardwares around either. Even though HD is like a block from my house, I often go to the local place because I know stores like theirs are dwindling. Plus, they have some things HD/Lowes just don't fucking have such as:

-Hardened bolts, grade 8, etc.
-Bulk fucking hose (HD got rid of their fucking bulk hose sections
-All kinds of electrical bits and bobs you may not find at HD including fuses the size of a hot dog, etc.
-Fucking Interstate batteries. So I don't need to go on my lunch to the Interstate vendor store that's only open 8-5 MF. I'm convinced Interstates are the best lead acid batteries you can buy.
-Various ammunition
-Case knives
-Preformed concrete stairs

Anyway. I'm a huge fan of this place. It might only be because the ceiling is like an 8 or 10 foot ceiling that it feels this way but you walk in and the service is always great. Super friendly floor guys and girls that are always trying to help. Shit just stacked wall to wall. It may not actually have that much stuff compared to HD, and I don't know if they have as much lumber, but it's like a candy store, I go there with my dad and I feel 10 again when we'd used to go to the old hardware store he worked at or another one in the area. The store just sprawls on and on and it feels like it never ends. I hope they never go out of business. We need more local hardware guys.

The one by me is not as close as my beloved local store or the HD/Lowes, but when we go, it's an event. And they have some stuff some places don't have. Absolutely overwhelming. Our store you walk in and it's two fucking floors. They have a glass elevator and a moving escalator carts go on and it locks the wheels so sociopaths like me don't push carts full of roofing nails down into crowds of incoming people. No fun. Anyway. You walk in and it's like two stories of manliness. They got all the shit. And Knipex tools of all things. Love Menards.

I have had an Interstate in my 300CE since I bought it in 2014, it has been fully discharged multiple multiple times and still rolls all the windows up on battery and starts the car no problem.
