Ok if this is the best board, but I'm looking to invest in an impact driver for home use/projects and such. I've worked construction in the past and used dewalt but the gun died on me, possibly from water or just getting dropped/hit too many times. Any recomondations for best bang for your buck?

I like Makita. They have a nice color

Dewalt. Their new flexvolt tools are pretty sweet. The impact is just a 20v but still, you are going to pick a tool for the battery platform.

Don't buy brushless unless it's on a big sale.

There is a video on youtube where they tested all the major brands of 1/4" impact drivers and the makita came out the best over all. I have 2 of them. they are really good.

Don’t base your decision on torque numbers because some of these new brushless impacts are complete overkill for driving regular wood screws. They’re approaching 3/8” impact wrench numbers.

I still love the 12v tools for at home. If you went with something like the M12 Fuel or even regular one, I don’t think you would be disappointed.

Another +1 for Makita
I've used them for only about 3 years now. A mechanic I work with has a large collection of Makita tools and a couple drills are 12+ years old. Really good stuff.

I have Milwaukee, it's ok. But I have some trigger problems with my 1/2" impact and my 1/2" drill amd my 1/4" impact driver. I would try something else desu, but I'm stuck with it.

https://www.protoolreviews.com/tools/best-18v-impact-driver-head-to-head-review/43129/

this is the most recent impact driver test done, its actually pretty interesting since they worked in some budget brands like Hercules, the Hydraulic impact drivers and Makita's Hybrid Driver that was finally released in the US.

the Makita came out on top but just barely over the Milwaukee M18 Gen 3 Fuel driver, mostly because they liked all the new buttons and features of the Makita. also note that that Makita model isnt sold in most stores yet and is quite a bit more expensive than others ($189 bare tool vs $129 for the Milwaukee).

Hilti/Miluakkee/Dewalt
>Tradesman, Tax Deductible or the Boss is Buying

Makita
>a serious DIYer/solid middle income home owner all around great tools, can replace the brushes easily

Ryobi
>DIY skills are good but are not at such a level you will notice the difference to Makita. Akin to a novice piano player not being able to appreciate a yamaha grand.

Also
>for many less used tools one may buy Ryobi for price. For instance, if you rarely use the grinder maybe buy the ryobi one for 40% less.

>trigger feel and response

One of the most important things on an impact driver regardless of torque/battery life and so on.

Being able to feather/tap/vary the speed using the trigger is essential to becoming great with the impact driver. You will be able to carefully pull out tiny electronics screw with out stripping if you have a fine tuned trigger and get used to working it.

Some triggers are just sloppy, there rough, they go basically off, med, snap the bolt fast.

Very important to try the trigger on nay drill you buy

I like rigid for the battery warranty.. Even if the tool itself isnt the best(its still among the top) knowing that I can swap the battery 5 years from now is comforting... Odds are you're not going to break your tool in the next decade, but the battery is definitely going to crap out in that same time frame.

Ridgid has a new 1/4” hex driver rayed at 2400in-lbs. Luckily it has some different settings because a speed setting alone on a tool that powerful would suck for smaller screws. I would love to play around with one, but all that tech in a tool makes me nervous since that will be one of the first things to fail.

Also Makita is def in the same class as DeWalt and Milwaukee. The pricing is very similar too.

Protip- the lifetime warranty on the batteries is only on packs that come with kits. If you buy an individual pack, you get 3 years.

Pretty much every other company has a 3 year warranty on their stuff (except HF). Milwaukee is 5yrs on tools, 3 on hatteries.

I'm on team teal. makita used to be the best battery platform, but now Milwaukee is. batteries are still good, but you can fuck them up in the high draw tools (grinder, sawzall).
dewalt are not as good as makita or Milwaukee. I hear the bauer and earthquake stuff from harbor freight isn't bad

I kind of did put it at top. All my battery tools are makita. Im saying if you dont have to pay the difference and your boss is paying for them makita and dewalt have lifetime warrantees ( i think ) and dewalt has 20v capability.

Personally a huge fan of makita.

I'm still raw over DeWalt abandoning their previous platform. Also their 20v is 18v like everyone else.

Honestly, Milwaukee, Makita, and DeWalt are roughly equivalent. None of their battery platforms' features are all that compelling, at least not compared to the tools themselves. The second tier brands are owner by the same companies but are more bang for the buck oriented.

One thing I do like about Makita is that their compact and subcompact tools are basically similar to 12v tools in purpose but being still 18v, they are battery compatible with the big boys.

It really comes down to tool availability. I wanted a line with a tracksaw and router. Which rules out Milwaukee. If all you'll ever care about is the impact driver, then grab a second tier brand like PC, rigid, or ryobi.
